I'm not certain what you're asking. Are you simply trying to just rename the backup file? or do you need to change the DB name in the contents of the file?

If the latter is the case, simply open the backup file in any text editor and do a find/replace all for the database name.

replaced the name in database backup with a prefix and changed the config.php too

I did it again just minutes ago and it didnt work.

what i am encountering is the database restored, I am still in ACP.
when i click on ie. configuration in ACP, I was asked to log in. while still maintaining the acp frame..
managed to log in and it seems like ervything works, the configuration, users, etc.

except for "preview forum" "forum index" which generates a page not found err

My first guess is the path to your files are wrong. Make sure the path is correct in ACP and also confirm that your directory structure is correct in the directory you have phpBB installed.

It might help to be a little more clear about what you are doing. I'm taking a guess that you are upgrading phpBB. If that is the case, then the problem is that the database structure for version 2.0.4, etc is different from 2.0.8. In otherwords, you can't restore a fresh database of an older version into 2.0.8

You need to start with 2.0.4 and run the upgrade per the phpBB instructions. This will update the database table structure to the new version.

I seem to be able to view everything fine as a guest. But no luck registering. Didn't even get an error. It just timed out on me.

Hmmm. I have seen instances where restore doesn't always perfectly update the tables. When you changed the database name, did you verify that all references to the old database name were changed to the new name? That's the only thing I can think of that may be giving you errors. If you have phpMyAdmin, verify the table names and structure are correct, especially for the users and sessions tables, and anything related to admin and so on.
