How to run a .php file on my desktop so that I can test it while coding.

When I click on the file it starts internet explorer then asks if I want to open or save the file.

If I click open it says the file is downloaded but I am unable to view it.

Are you writing the PHP for the web? If so, you need to have PHP installed locally with a web server, and access it via a local URL (e.g. localhost/).

I would recommend WAMP as it's simple to use from the very beginning and you get Apache, MySQL, PHPMyAdmin for Windows. (I assume you use Windows since Internet Explorer opens).

Thank you Spork and Bogey for your prompt replies.
Yes I am writing for the web.

I will investigate both the suggestions to see what suits me best.

This has been a big help, at least I know where to start.
