I learned C++ using an e-book. It was Sam's Teach Yourself C++ in 21 days! It is a good book could start you off from the basics to the advanced.

For the compiler I'd suggest that you use Borland Turbo C++ 3.0. It is a free download today. It runs using DOS but hell I think it's powerful! Or if you hate DOS compilers, I'd suggest that you use MS Visual C++ =)

I have had similar experiences as Kei with C++. I also learned on Samm's and found it useful as a beginner's tool. Once I started getting a little more serious, I got Microsoft Visual.Net which included Visual C++ in the package. It may cost a bit more money but it is well worth it.

If you have any specific questions feel free to PM me. I'm in the middle of a Computer Science program right now and although I am far from being done with receiving my degree, I feel that I have a pretty decent handle on C++. If I can help let me know.

syh - I fixed your link for you. You have BBCode always disabled in your profile. You can enable that in your profile for all posts or you can temporarily enable it in any individual post. The bottom line is when you post URL's or anything that requires BBCode, you'll need to have it turned on to work.
