On my site I have a MySQL daterbace but when getting data from it the site runs slow, I can add data to it and even request some parts (in my case that titles and primary keys) but as so as I try to access the actual page it runs slow and then times out, because I can do all the rest in a matter of seconds I think it must be my coding. I just wanted to know can coding alone slow a site down?

Absolutely. The way you approach your code can make a world of difference in performance and proper connection resolution.

If you like, you can post the code here and we could try to help you find the problem that slows down the site so much.

Make sure you have the correct data structures in place. The next thing to look for is prehaps some sort of recursive loop or some sort of iffy condition test.
