password entered differ in database

Guys...my friend try and tells to me about changing the password which the user inputted in log in form but the password that stored in database is differ..
for example the password is sample but it generates different characters in database and the password which is sample is not on it..
and he say something about hashbut i'm not xure..

Can you post the code that is used to insert data to the database? And also how the word "sample" looks like when stored to the database.

I dont have the code its just my friend tell to me co'z he try it in his page..the sample password is not in the database even a single letter of it..on the other hand my other friend tells to me that when entered a password the word that he entered is in there in database but their is additional character..

u sure the password is not encrypted in MD5 hash to prevent someone from stealing it directly?
