What the hell is OACS?

PHP/MySQL hosting has become very widespread and very inexpensive. It enables people to design data driven dynamic websites without controlling their own server.

No it's not. His question implied what is better about PHP over OACS? I'm asking, what does OACS offer that PHP doesn't?

I use PHP, i'm happy with PHP, why should I even look at OACS?

OACS is a framework for aplication development on AOLserver, using oracle or PostgreSQL database and is written in TCL.
So, in general, it's more a TCL vs PHP, OACS vs LAMP, AOLserver vs Apache, PostgreSQL vs MySQL question.

The most obvious advantage of PHP as a language is its popularity = support.

I mean, I'm not going to run anything with the words "AOL" in it on a production server.

Alot of people use PHP because there are becoming more and more (free) hosts which have PHP as a service. All the others alot of people havnt even heard of.

I was thinking the same thing, except I put a period right after "AOL" in it

Let us not forget that Apache is THE most widely used web server out there, the most stable and has the best support available.

If you're inclined to use TCL, check out
http://tcl.apache.org/

As to why PHP over TCL, there are more apps available that use PHP, more people use it, so there's better support for it.

As to why use MySQL over PostgreSQL, same as above.

As to the whole why LAMP over OACS, I think I've answered that.

Let us also not forget what happened when M$ bought Hotmail and tried to take them off the Apache servers they were running.

Aren't they running some form of bastardized BSD on there now?

Great thanks for the info, that makes the most sense. I am just trying to figure out which programming language to use. I guess that I deserve what I get posting a question like that on a PHP based forum. :turn-l:
