I'm helping out a friend with his forums and trying to implement a code that would allow member badges assigned to usergroups. (not ranks). He would like these badges to show up on individual posts AND the member profile.

He's running PHPBB 2.0.23 and it's heavily MODDED using something called CHBB (categories heirarchy).

I'm trying to wrap my head around it, but I get lost. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do?

It would most likely require custom programming. PHPBB2 is fairly old, most of the new plugins and mods are being made for version 3. After a quick search this is all I found:
