Ergh. I know you guys have to deal with n00b webmasters a lot, so I'll try to keep this short.

My friend (conorific) and I are trying get a forum up on our webserver (UNIX, 1 GB, HVDN broadband connection). We're looking for a small, customizable PHP/mySQL script.

After trying phpBB (too large), and edgeboard (evil), we decided to appeal to a higher authority. So.

If you've used any forum scripts before, which one worked best for you?

I'm considering the following:

MercuryBoard
punBB
XMB

Check Poetic Pollution

http://poeticpollution.net/scripts/

A friend of mine is just started using the 9volt+ which is a perl board. I'm not up on the details of it, but I know perl boards are pretty small and simple. I'm not sure I could recommend a better php board that phpBB that works with SQL database. Too bad it's too large for your requirements. It's a great board.

Poetic Pollution has a good working model up and running:

http://poeticpollution.net/scripts/dev/9Volt-Plus/

Here's my friend's, although, keep in mind he just installed it and doesn't have it tweaked the way he wants it., I'm including it because, Steve is also one of the few people I know of who did his site without tables. Just CSS. Very simple, nice design and emulates an older bbs format that we who post there were used to from prior versions of the site.

The theme of the board is Tech Resources:

Here's the older version if you want to compare (the script on the old one is proprietary and isn't available as freeware):

I post at those boards as The Webmaster.

I've used various Perl boards for years prior to discovering phpBB and they do work very well (even with heavy traffic -- in most cases).

Perl is okay, however it is not an embedded language (unless you use embperl ) . :)

With Perl I find myself trying to emulate an embedded environment using hooks and templates, and sometimes getting confused by the impossible language constructs , lol.

Perl was awesome in 2000. :D

EDIT*
Awesome forum btw :)

hehee... Perl's awesome in 2004 as well! Personally, I like that it's not embedded because then I don't get confused as easily.

Also, thanks for the good words about the forum. It's a labor of love and discontempt for bloatware.. :D

Welcome to OZZU polluted! Hey, I wasn't even thinking of it as a plug. And when I recommended it, it was before I even knew it was you! *wink. I just saw what Steve did with it and thought it was a perfect matchup for the question at hand. I sincerely think it's a great work, and knowing you makes it all that more appealing. Glad you made it here. *lol (I should have given you my referal link -- I'm never going to pick up any referal points at the rate I'm going! *lol)

Oh, and welcome to OZZU to you, too, phpSelectah
