As long as your file is named with a .php extension, you can pretty much do whatever you want. . . .

Make sure you close and open your php tagss correctly. If you open, you must close.

Sometimes I like to have a variable sent to th ephp page, and then run different options for formatting.

Code: [ Select ]
$theirLogo = $sentvariable

If($theirLogo =="1"){

?>//html area
<table aling=center border=0><tr><td><img src=http://www.room3art.com/logo.gif></td></tr></table>
<?
//begin php again

}//end if statement to start html with no php
  1. $theirLogo = $sentvariable
  2. If($theirLogo =="1"){
  3. ?>//html area
  4. <table aling=center border=0><tr><td><img src=http://www.room3art.com/logo.gif></td></tr></table>
  5. <?
  6. //begin php again
  7. }//end if statement to start html with no php

If you just list your variable coming from the database, it might look to plain. But you can do pretty much anything.[/code]

ok. brill, i am making progress thanks to your patience. another question. i know that php is supposed to be a really good replacement for IFrames. but the thing that IFrames have is the scrollbar. can php match that? can info br in a table cell and be scrollable thru php? sounds dumb but i would like to know what limitations php has. if any. it seems that php and mysql are the best thing since the microchip!!

If you can, stay away from scroll bars. php allows a include("youpage.php"); and require("yourpage.php"); functions that will input those pages into your coding.

Mostly, you can use this feature to require a header page, usually your logo with basic links, and a footer page, that is your copyright material and nav bar if needed.

php, is not a substitute for html coding, ie frames, iframes etc. . . You can use php to fill a html document on the fly. You can write javascript functions to be written to your window in php. etc. . .

reason why i ask this is because the template i am making is to house 40 - 50 pages. some of them are quite long textually. there are table cells above and below the main textual area. my client doesnt want the user to scroll and has stipulated that the screensize be as small as possible (640*480) and placed centrally. what happenes when the text is too much for the area ie tabulated text

is there a way to make text that was pulled out of a database an actual link? for instance. i have a html template with 3 rows. row1 has the main menu buttons, row 2 has sub menu buttons and row 3 has the main text. for each button in row 1 there are 4 sub menu buttons which are shown in row 2. how do i get the submenu buttoins to be links? all links are textual links. no pics

Do you still need help with this? I have used php to create javascript functions so that I can use the dom to manipulate a pages content.

If you know your html, then this won't be a problem. As you scan a directory, read from a database, or load a variables, you will have a variable. This variable can be set as a href, displayed as normal text, or put into a drop down menu.

First, you should initialize the menu, then, as you are obtaining your variables, you can write them into the document. As I have done with room3art.com, everytime you go to the projects section, it scans the directories, and then creates the javascripting to display all the different categories. If you look at the source code, you will find them in a very nice order. That is my programming style. The php code is not as efficient, but I like to check my work via looking at the html coding.

Sorry for not replying as swiftly as before. . . I have been very busy with life. I hope things are going as you like. Oh, When your done with the site, could you post it here? I would like to view it.

Thanks

for lack of time i have had to abandon the php/mysql in preference for iframes. i would still at some stage like to re design the site in php/mysql. the problem i was having was this: in dos i would write my sql code. when inputting the textual info i would get into trouble because in do i could only type for a maximum of 3 lines. i dont know why that is.

can ppl please tell me what software do you use to write your sql code? dos or a windows software?

site by the way is http://www.buildingdoctors.co.uk
