what is CGI? why do people use it for guestbooks and stuff. I need to know why I wouldn't write the blog or guestbook in PHP or something.

CGI stands for Common Gateway Interface. Back before there was PHP and Java, it enabled people to write web applications. It is not a programming language in itself, but allows people to write web programs in any language that can run on the server.

If you are new to programming, I'd stick to trying to learn PHP. If you are an experienced C programmer maybe you'd just want to write CGI programs in C.
