vb's great but it depends what your trying to do, try to program a client-server app in VB...
it's a lot easier in c++, but then graphics are rougher in c++ so, what's the best language??

I say it depends on what your trying to accomplish. I guess that's why the pre-prod part is important LOL :D

for my part, I know : c/c++
vb
sql (and Oracle sql plus)
javascript
vbscript

I'm currently looking for a good book on either ADA, Fortran or Delphi.
Old and depreciated languages, just for fun...

I can modify the heck out of them! *lol

No, seriously,
I can write most of my own javascripts if someone hasn't done it for me already.

I can modify ASP, Perl, VB and now PHP with mySQL to get them to mostly do what I want.

I'd say I'm currently best at PHP and I only just started learning it 2 weeks ago. It's the only other one besides javascript I understand enough to write my own code.

Lol, IMadmin! You'll learn all about them in due time...and that's when you'll realize how little you know. I'm about in the same boat as you, though. I know HTML, CSS, and the very basics of JavaScript. Haha, but I also know QBASIC (like that's really going to come in handy someday)! As soon as I take another semester of QBASIC I'll be eligible to take AP Computer Science where I shall learn C++. I'm both excited and scared about that...

BASIC (used in QBASIC, but it's not called QBASIC)
HTM (no L, it's not a language imho, but I'll list it since everyone else is)
C++
PHP
SQL
VB
CSS
Java
Javascript
Perl

I learned those in somewhere close to that order. PHP is still my favorite language by far, especially with the new features in PHP5 like a new "working" object model with object visibility, constructors, per-class constants, and __autoload(). Truely a scripted language with compiled properties and behavior. C++ would of hit that list if I didn't get heavy into web development. Java is alright, but Javascript just flat out sucks. Perl is confusing as hell dealing with variables.

I'd still like to learn some of the .NET technology, C#, and some ASP one of these days.

It is a language, just not a programming language. It is a markup language, thus why it stands for Hyper Text Markup Language :)

Yes, heed this advice! It's 10 times easier than making tables (which I don't even touch anymore), and yes, it helps a ton on color schemes and just overall look.

Also it helps with DIV tags (I am assuming you use those since you don't use tables)

I'm surprised at how many people find CSS useless and don't bother to learn it. It really is quite valuable and more people need to learn to love it! I don't know what I would do without style sheets or DIV tags. CSS has certainly saved me a lot of hassle.

Yes, I use DIV tags. I guess it is pretty hard to put together a good layout without tables or DIV tags... hehe. It's just a lot easier for me to define positioning with DIV tags then to worry about table nesting, you tend to run into a lot of problems and get lost in your nesting with more complex designs.

The thing about DIV positioning that i have found, is that it looks bad on different screen resolutions, and one rule i was told alot by friends is never have "this site is best viewed under 1024x768 32bit colors" crap, because it makes people go away x.x

I would have to agree with you r0bin, I always find it amusing when a site says "its best viewed at 1024x768" or whatever else. People use a wide range of resolutions, and I really doubt they are going to change their resolution just so they can view it at the one it was designed for. The web designer should design a site and make sure it works in the majority of resolutions.

C+/++ - a little bit
Qbasic - use to be proficient / but very little use today (some of the commands are still used by VB thou)
assembly language - some knowledge / need to refresh thou
VB - In the middle of learning
Batch scripts (DOS) - when ever I need it, which isn't to often

I know there is none of those fancy languages HTML, Perl, PHP in the list. One day I'll get around to it, if I ever build my own website. I got to much else to learn before I get around those.

Gee I would have never have guessed....but what DOES that "L" in HTML stand for then :-? I may be a bit confused, but isn't it Hyper Text Mark-up Language......

Maybe I was wrong.

I know it may not be able to handle variables and other such things like real "languages" but look back and actually read this post and you will see it has been discussed.

I believe you are partly wrong. JavaScript and PHP are indeed programming languages. They are what are known as Interpreted Languages. The other type are Compiled languages. I agree that HTML, XHTML, CSS are not programming languages, however it is still interesting to know what people can use.

I think the reason it isn't considered (technically it IS a markup language) is because it doesn't have control statements and can't handle variables.

I guess you could say I know the following:
  • HTML
  • JavaScript << not much to know.... in my humble opinion
  • PHP << learning
  • Python << learning, but not really b/c I get distracted so easily

These are honestly what I know, and I really don't think WML qualifies as a language!

Nor does CSS qualify either; CSS = Cascading Style Sheets, they are basically like HTML, just pre-defined non-variant values down a page; why is this a language?!!

I like PHP, but my uncle is trying to convince me to convert to Python; does anybody here have any Python experience?

I really hate Microsoft but I hear C/ASM is nice... C just seems too low-level ; maybe I'll try c## or Java...

I use most of them quite regularly, however on the C++ and Java side I'm pretty novice. I'm able to write code in it, but still make a lot of syntax errors. It also takes me a lot longer to debug in comparison to C#, PHP or VB.

Kasracer suggested that HTML, XHTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP are not programming languages? Those are just mark-up tags and scripts.

Programming languages are languages designed to program computers. Scripts program a computer to perform actions and, therefore, must be programs. JavaScript, PHP, VB Script, and Perl are scripts and, therefore, most be programming languages. In fact, a DOS batch file is a programming language: analogous to tits on the bull, but still a programming language.

There was a time when assembly programmers thought third-generation languages such as C were not true programming languages. This is nothing more than plain ignorance of the definition.

Be it assembly, procedural, object oriented, or even punch cards: if it programs a computer, it must be a program language!

Seriously! Are you claiming that Perl is not a programming language? I think Larry Wall, the creator of Perl, would take serious issue with that perspective. Maybe you think a programming language needs a compiler. If so, then I suggest you download bat2exe and compile some batch files.

The real debate is the definition of a computer programmer. (This would make a great new thread!)

P.S. Before you flame me, please note I haven't argued that HTML, XHTML, or CSS are programming languages. They're not! :D

Uh, does HTML even count as a programming language? I mean there's no logic involved. Seems more like a formatting language than a programming language, so I hardly think it counts.

Mine:
#1 - PHP (4 years)
#2 - Perl (1 year - yuck)
#3 - JavaScript (I suck, but can do a little)

I'd like to learn RUBY, and I need to wrap my mind around OOP in PHP. I know how to do it, I just never do. I'm old-school I guess.

If HTML is counted in the discussion, than I guess I should add CSS as well. Damn good at css.

I am not surprised that you're having trouble learning java.
let me give you a crude and quick history lesson.

First there was C. In the C programming language to increment a value you can do it in two ways.
1. MyValue = MyValue+1, or
2. MyValue ++

Thus, the next version of C is C++.
Java was built using C++. In Fact, if you write in Java, you use about 80% of C++ functions. The programming syntax and constructs etc, are pretty much the same from C, through to java.

There are stacks of online tutorials for learning C, C++ and Java.
If you really want to learn Java, then you should start with C, then C++ and then finally go to Java. Unless you're an absolute super brain, I really doubt you could learn java to the point where you could actually use it to its full potential, if you don't learn the others first.

I am not saying spend six months to become proficient in C, then another 6 months to become half useful in C++, then shift on to java... that's just crazy... But spend a couple of months getting the basics down first.
I remember seeing at my brother-inlaw's place a book titled "Teach yourself C in 24 hours". It was arranged into 24, 1 hour long chapters. Sure, it would take you far longer to be a decent C coder, but a week of reading this book and doing the examples that caught your eye would hold you in good stead for reading a similar book in C++.

Pay some close attention to the C++ one, it's REALLY important to learn the Object Orientated Programming (OOP) way of doing things. Grasp that well and all the side tasks(encapsulation etc) and you'll be about 80% of the way to learning Java. after all, like I said before, Java is 80% C++.

The only thing left to learn after that is all the java specific stuff.

Do the groundwork first, it will give you REAL results fastest.

And as for super genius.... Nope not at all... just good groundwork at the beginning!

the best way to learn any programming langauage, like just about anything else in life, is to dive right in and get hands your hands dirty!

Oh,and ask lots of questions.
Even if you think its a pretty stupid question to ask. The only stupid question, is the question never asked and never answered.

Especially, when you have a place like this at your finger tips where people are so keen to help and generous with their time. It's almost a case of being stupid not to ask!

Anyway, go and get those hands dirty

CSS
JavaScript
LotusScript (as if that even counts as a scripting language)

Most of what I write is in Perl. One of these days I intend to do something with PHP, but I haven't had a critical need to do so yet - or any spare time for that matter.

Most of my background is as a network administrator, though for the past three years I've done little other than development work of some kind or another.

This

*edit*
I finally started working with PHP

Server-side:
PHP :D
ASP (VBScript)
getting into COM components

Client-Side:
Javascript (although browser compatability makes me mad)

Markup:
HTML 4+
XHTML 1
CSS 2
XML (getting it slowly)

Fiddling with:
C
C++
C#
Java

My interest doesn't really lay in web development, it is just a means to an end, more interested in the low-level stuff and 3D graphics programming just haven't had the time to dig into it yet

Hello,

I've programmed in a lot of languages. Mostly chronological:

C64 basic
Machine Language
Assembly
GWBasic
C
Pascal ( ugh. I hate to admit this one...it was just once in high school honest...)
SQL
ODBC
HTML - ( its a markup, not a programming, language. theres no loops!!)
C++
Perl
ksh
korn
Java
Javascript
ASP
PHP
CLI ( Call Level Interface - Non Microsoft ODBC... )
Trans Basic ( anyone know this one? )

Ugh there are probably more I just can't think of them right now.

Well i've been into programming since highschool: The languages I used are in chronological order:

1) Basic - nostalgic programming at its best
2) Pascal - 4th year high
3) Visual Basic - Fell in love with it! I currently use it for making GUI for my programs
4) C&C++ College

I'm currently studying Java at home! And when I have time I play PC games also! ^_^

I have learned several programming languages over the past couple of years. I'm better at some than others. I guess it all comes down to what you use on a daily basis.

C++ (Not too good, but don't use it that often)
Java (Better at it than C++, but still don't use it much)
PHP (Use it all the time so fairly proficient with it)
Perl (Same as with PHP...always using it)
Flash ActionScript (Always using it)
HTML (Not too bad)
CSS (Just started learning it)

With my brief visits here, I've realized that this is the most advanced forum out there. There are a lot of tech savvy guru's here that will help you. I know HTML, PHP, ASP, VB Script, JavaScript, CSS, MySQL, MS SQL, PostgreSQL, etc...

After HTML, JavaScript, CSS

I would start PHP/MySQL or ASP/MS Access.
Which technology you decide on I guess would be personal preference.

Good Luck!

To start, I would learn HTML and CSS.

Here's an excellent beginner's HTML tutorial.

I recommend this site because the author makes it clear what HTML should be used for: Markup (structure); not presentation. In other words, HTML is used to markup the various parts of you website. If you have a paragraph, mark it up as such.
Code: [ Select ]
<p>This is a paragraph...</p>
If you have a heading, then use the appropriate tag:
Code: [ Select ]
<h1>this is a heading</h1>

CSS is used for presentation. CSS is where you define what fonts are used, font sizes, colors, positioning, etc. Here's a good place to start:
http://www.westciv.com/style_master/aca ... ideas.html

Well, you'll get a better understanding of what I mean if you go through the tutorials.

Also, get a good text editor with syntax highlighting. It will make your coding endeavors a bit more pleasurable. I like Crimson Editor. It's free and supports html, css, javascript, plus many other programming languages.

As another way of saying the exact same thing, you use markup to indicate what the text <b>means</b>. lists can be marked up with br tags, but it doesn't have the same <b>meaning</b> as li tags. Meaningful markup is an important point which about 95% of people seem to miss (or just plain ignore).

In terms of technical excellency, meaningful markup and css styling is more important than Javascript, especially seeing as many people don't have support for JS. I think a lot of people gloss over CSS on the way to making stuff move and do fancy things with javascript. I know I did  I then realised that JS is to be used sparingly and I had wasted a lot of time on it...

Key thing to remember when using javascript is to <b>never rely on it being there</b>. Make sure that the site is still 100% useable without it.

If anyone is interested in info on meaningful markup and why it is important, do a google for "semantic markup". It's the same thing, just with fancy words, and you'll probably get better results ;)

See, people here know a lot. :) Especially rtm223. It would behoove you to follow his sage advice. Not because he agrees with what I said, but because he is really good at this.

Everytime I see your username, rtm, I think of the phrase 'read the manual'.
Or more precisely, rtfm, as that used to be the most common answer to a question on the internet. Oh well, now I'm just blathering. I've got to go to bed. It's so late at night that early morning has already begun...

If you don't mind the pain, the best way I know of learning HTML and CSS is reading the specification from http://www.w3c.org.

Very painful but it'll save you lots of aggro later in life, the best way is perhaps the hardest.

PHP and MySQL is probably what you would choose to learn if you decide you need to.

You might choose to learn ASP instead of PHP if you are working with MicroSoft servers.

JAVA is generally unnecessary, typically people learn JAVA for JAVA server pages working with Tom Cat etc., this tends to be much more specialised.

I would say learn what you can on the basics first. Someone mentioned W3C, that is a great place to start. Here are a few others you may want to take a look at:

http://cgi.resourceindex.com/ (Someone here may say you should use PHP instead. Since I don't know anything about it I can't say but that should be further down the road anyway)

**I bet that last one will get a lot of you fired up  I don't even know what's in there, I just threw it up for a reaction

Programming girls in English can be very useful if I want them to work on a website.

On the css topic, it seemed like after I became proficient in CSS, javascript became more or less useless since I can already do most of the important stuff with php. I can hardly see a need for it at all. At least php works on the backend and has no (or little) affect on d/l speeds (usually).

I'm teaching some programming languages....
I used to be using FORTRAN, PL/I, ALGOL, PASCAL, BASIC, SMALLTALK, OPS5, Assembler for Z80/8086/6502, and so on,,, almost forgotten, and used to try to learn COBOL, APL, etc. but gave up. Now I can teach you, C, Objective-C, Java, Lisp, Prolog, csh-script, awk, and HTML, and am on my way of learning C++, ruby, and perl. More languages I'd like to learn are Max/MSP and IntelligentPad. Because I don't have enough skill on ruby or perl, I usually make a CGI program by combination of csh-script and awk, and sometimes by C language.

Just rename the file (change file extension from .txt to .pl). And when you save the file in notepad change the field ?Save as type? to ?All Files? instead ?Text Documents (*.txt)?

When you save the file, under the filename, you'll notice a select box that says "Text document (*.txt)". If you click that and choose "All Files" notepad will save with the extension you want instead of using .txt.

Only 8 characters in the language '+', '-', '<', '>', ',', '.', '[' and ']', but you can write any program in boyfriend (assuming you can redirect standard input and output to any i/o device you need to use)

Definitely going to write everything in boyfriend from now on, NOT!

in order I learnt then.

YaBasic (All forgotten now...)
Pascal (Never got round to doing any graphics, just as well really...)
Visual Basic (I'm pretty good at this, but could do with learning more...)
Actionscript(The one for flash, I've just about got the basics)
HTML (I know, I read most of the pages in this thread, It just makes my list look longer...)
CSS (A tiny bit...)
Javascript
C (Just made my first hello world yesterday!)

err... I think that is it. not bad for a year, i also started to learn some DX8 for VB, but I don't know if I shouldn't just wait to use it in c... mebbie I'll have a look at that boyfriend... lol!

These lists look sort of long, but that is countered by the fact that I do not know any of these languages well, except for boyfriend, User RPL, BASIC, and the markup languages which are not DocBook.

Plus, I listed multiple specifications of HTML, as if knowing the distinctions is important.

Programming languages:
boyfriend (it's my favorite)
User Reverse Polish LISP (it's really my favorite. For HP calculators)
System Reverse Polish LISP (but I like this one better)
Forth (a bit)
Scheme (this is cool)
C++ (I use it, but I haven't really learned it per se)
Perl (I use it so rarely that I have to check references all the time)
PHP (I don't like it, just because I'm a stooge. However, I wouldn't willingly use anything else for Web programming)
Java (I've written exactly one program with this language, total, and it is the most useful to other people of all that I have made)
BASIC (wrote a Tetris in Q-BASIC)
TI-Basic (which is technically not a form of BASIC. Most useless language ever, except for the fact that a calculator-sabatoge program I wrote and named "TETRIS" resulted in my stolen TI-83 being returned)
C# (wrote one program with this, too, and mostly other people did the work. However, I learned a lot of unused information about writing for tablet PCs in the process)

Markup Languages
HTML 2 (a nicely designed language)
HTML 3 (an interesting draft with nice features)
HTML 3.2 (documentation of proprietary crap)
HTML 4.01 (moved people away from proprietary crap, slowly)
XHTML 1.0 (technically speaking, it breaks compatibility with HTML, but does not break compatibility with any browsers, except for a couple. Completely useless; most people adopt it just because it's the newest standard and because it has an X at the beginning of its name)
XHTML 1.1 (an exercise in futility)
XHTML 2 (a great move in the right direction. Will take a long time to become adopted, if that ever happens. Still has problems from the fact that it is XML)
UTD (an interesting and incomplete proposal that would be great if it were further developed. see http://www.cs.tut.fi/~jkorpela/data/utd.html )
DocBook (learned it for fun, forgot it too)
DHTML (wtf, there is no such thing as DHTML. Anybody who uses the term "DHTML" should be shot. Do you think I am joking?)

Hated Languages
Javascript (the amount of times it is used wisely does not make up for the amount it is misused)
TI-89-Basic (just about the most badly-designed language ever, which is a shame for something that would otherwise be rather powerful, for a calculator)
C# (I just don't like how the name is also the name of a set of exponentially related frequencies of sound)
B flat (just kidding. Not a funny joke, eh?)
Flash (I don't hate Flash; I just hate people who use it when they don't need to. I love Flash, actually)
HTML As Stored In Many People's Minds and As Many People Write It (the language is just useless when people only care about the visual presentation in a select group of browsers)

I only know 10-15 languages but with that spread the potential to learn a required language in a week is high. Retention is the biggest trick and the only good reason that I don't study all languages. Maybe another question for this forum is what languages do you consider important OR how would you group languages (ie. c,c++,java,js,php or basic,vb,vbs all one group)?

The truth is that most languages are modeled after others and simply have different built-ins and a couple or twist(which are the main reason for their existence)

Oooh, so now I get to group them! :)

-- human languages --
Comprehensible:
English
French
Esperanto

Incomprehensible:
FFF00 (this is a real human language, based off of Reverse Polish logic. Let's just say it has word endings for connecting other words together. And it only exists in written form; spoken form is purely tonal.)

-- programming languages --

Group 1: Novelty
boyfriend

Group 2: Reverse Polish logic / Forth languages
User Reverse Polish LISP
System Reverse Polish LISP
Forth

Group 3: Scheme
Scheme

Group 4: The C-like languages (not picking C for any special reason)
C++
Java
Perl
PHP
BASIC
C#

Group 5: Crappy BASIC-ish languages that are just not fun
TI-83-Basic
TI-89-Basic
"HP-BASIC"

Group 5a: Better calculator languages
TI-85/86-Basic

-- markup languages --

Group 6: Markup Languages that had a chance to be good
HTML 2
HTML 3

Group 7a: Good markup languages (XML)
DocBook
XHTML 2

Group 7b: not XML-based
UTD

Group 7: Markup Languages w/ joke semantics
HTML 3.2
HTML 4.01
XHTML 1.0
XHTML 1.1 (an exercise in futility)
[/quote]

So, I would put c,c++,java,js,php AND basic,vb,vbs AND perl, pascal into one group. It's not little things about syntax that matter; all those languages have functions and such working the same way. After all, C# is directly mappable into one of the versions of Visual Basic. (VB .NET I guess.) I suppose you could subgroup them into categories, such as object oriented vs. non, etc. But syntax ancestry only matters on a superficial level.

I am ok with C but not really good, C++ has frightened me a bit so i didnt read and wrote too much in it, i am quite good at perl and good in php (but my MySQL and Postgre knowledge isnt good).

My favorite programming language is ruby though, i like the philosophy behind it. But, mind you, i am really bad at OOP, and without it you are at least one stage below the next ... stage, especially if you work on projects using/extending classes and libs. :/

PHP is very fine though, much simpler than C++ IMHO and you can proceed learning at a rather fast pace. Perl is also great, but i found the advanced parts a bit tricky (ie hard to learn for me)

HTML, XML, CSS is much simpler IMO

XML is very good btw...

Well isn't this a nerdy bunch? *sigh* Yes, I too am a nerd.

There are pages and pages of very impressive programmers here, I'll add my meager list to the masses.

Languages in the spotlight:
Java (JSP, Servlets & Applets, Beans, etc)
ColdFusion MX
Actionscript (if it counts seperately from javascript)
VB .NET (I say this but I lie - I only know VB6) :(
XML
SQL
C/C++
Languages everybody should know:
HTML
Javascript
Languages I wish I could forget:
DELPHI
COBOL
BASIC (MS and calc versions)
ASM (oh god the nightmares are flooding back)
And the apex of all languages:
LOGO (ahh the memories)

Other languages I've used in the past:
- C++ (used to be better, till i forgot inheritence/polymorphism)
- Qbasic (crappy, haven't used it in years.)
- x86 Assembly (Know little, teacher was crap...have to retake the course)

Other scripting languages I know
- HTML (I know a bit of the language, but always forgot about how to use certain tags)
- Kornshell (used to be pretty good about a year ago...now only intermediate)
- C shell (was taught this in the same class as the Kornshell...although not as well as Kornshell)

Any. It's a matter of a day or so. Any language is similar (syntax is what matters). The first language I learned was I don't remember what its called, but the purpose of it was to learn algorithmics and the thought process in programming, basic and non-basic features of programming. Then I used it in Pascal and so on and so on.

Not sure what this is about, browsing through the forum and answering stuff....

'C' systems programming - 10+ yrs, Pro C
'C++' on and off 10 yrs
Java ,JSP, Servlets - 4 yrs
PHP since it was released.
VB but don't use it.
SQL, Pro 'C', PL/SQL, etc., etc.
Ada used at Uni over a decade ago
Pascal, Assembler, Cobol, fortran - also used at Uni
HTML/CSS/XML

I think that's about it.

Well as you can see, I have some sort of habit of learning something halfway, and learning something else!

Meh, I don't count a language learnt unless you can write it near perfectly and debug most scripts yourself using the most basic program...

For example,
PHP - Windows Notepad
HTML - Windows Notepad
JS - Wnidows Notepad
CSS - Windows Notepad

:o Hence, I don't use dreamweaver of anything similar.

the languages i use are

*html (pro), though i don't count this as a programming language.
*css (pro), this one neighter
*javascript (bad), i hate this one actually, only learned if because i needed it to solve to solve something easily
*PHP (good), i love this one
*SQL (good), love this too
*C++ (beginning), i'm learning this to make a auto database updater behind my php text based game, working on this but its far from getting finished.

HTML - You can call me a master on HTML. I almost finished with the HTML forum. Unsecure, but I don't care (only the layout. Not the whole actual programming.).

Jacascript - Very basic. Not a pro at it.

CSS - So little, that it is emmbarasing.

I've spent 6 months doing PHP when I was doing my internship with a web-based company. So, I guess I'm quite familiar with PHP, version 4 at that time. Then, as typical PHP programmer would use, the mysql database.

Besides that, I know the surface knowledge to run other web languages such as ASP.net and Java (servlet, JSP).

Ops, is it a self promotion session?

I'd like to suggest that the Topic be split into a PHP Topic and a
PERL topic, and maybe others.

I really don't know any PHP, so I have to wade thru tons of posts
to help someone with a perl question.

Just my 2 cents.

PHP
ASP
SQL
C
C++
FoxPro
Lisp
Pascal
Basic (Atari Basic on Atari 600, Business Basic, QuickBasic) - ironically, never done VB
Perl
WSH (if that counts)
did some PovRay scripting for fun
HTML
JavaScript
Java
ASM
XML
Modula-2

I like C (not C++) a lot because it's a good balance between ease of programming and speed -- easier than ASM, faster than C++.

I do ASP/SQL/HTML/JavaScript combos mostly now.

Haven't begun .NET because I feel it's still got some maturing to do (Microsoft is still changing the function names and I HATE getting mixed up with functions from the various versions as the function names/parameters fluxuate -- they're doing that w/ XML now too, and it wastes a lot of my time). And, it's got an INSANE amount of overhead (mostly for the client) compared to doing the raw ASP.

The following are the languages I know and how much I know about them.

HTML(85%)
Javascript(15%)
QBasic(95%)
PHP(45%)
C++(20%)
Java(2%)
VB(20%) but out of practice

I am still adjusting to newer languages from using Qbasic for so long. I finally have gotten used to ; at the end of lines.

um... I know a litttle bit of C/C++
I know a little bit more of QBASIC

And I 'know' HTML.
and JavaScript (does that count?)

oh yeah, and I used to know a bit of Python and actually wrote a program that can lock another program, but Puthon wouldn't let me create an EXE so i stopped using it.

(if anyone knows how to make an EXE in python... tell me!)

thats it for me...

I've been collecting languages over the years it seems like. They've all been learned out of necessity though...

HTML
CSS (is that really programming?)
C/C++
Javascript
PHP

Hahah I posted on this topic about 10 months ago...

XHTML
CSS
PHP
MySQL
Javascript
Java
ActionScript

but now I can add to add more languages...

XML & XPath
C
VB

Currently right now I am looking into These Languages

Perl
Ruby
C++

and if you consider Bash to be a programming language, then that too :)

All in all the best language is PHP and then second to that is ActionScript. Then Visual Basic...

Seem to be picking them up by the day....

At college I did C, Java & VB

Now for work I don't use C, Java & VB (always the way, isn't it) but I have become reasonably skilled in Actionscript, PHP, ASP and am learning ASP.NET.

They aren't programming languages but everyone else has added them - so (X)HTML, CSS, XML

My next challenge - Ruby on Rails! Any language with a name that cool has to be worth learning :)

Some Coldfusion from my days in conventional employment
In the process of bringing my Javascript up to speed.

Planning to get to know Perl, C/C++ in the future, plus my recent transition to Linux has opened another avenue to explore.

I've probably posted once before in this VAST thread, but maby things have changed?

PHP (Intermediate)
HTM(L) (You can be a low level at this?)
Flash ActionScript (Just get on and do it...)
Javascript (Yeah, I can pull a few scripts out of thin air...)
XML (Took... 3mins to learn?)
AutoIT (Great for automating things!)
Batch (net send \\retard "Am I annoying you? Click ok if i'm not!")

There'll be others, but i've long forgotten them... I'm gonna start learning C++... Some dell person came to my house after I blew it up, he was replacing the mother board and power unit and CPU and we were talking about programming stuff, and he's prompted me to learn C++... So i'll get right on it!

Python (Low-level...basic DOS programs [such as one that gets numerical imput from the user and calculates the area of 2d & 3d gerometry] and simple Tkinter widgets stuff)

C++ (Noob....only complete program I can write is 'hello world' lol)

CSS (Can't write stuff from scratch, but I can go in and edit basic templates and alter certain aspects with a general knowledge of what I'm doing..)

XML (umm, I made a sitemap once :) )

Actionscript/Flash (can make buttoned menus, very simple games, not good with animation though...)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There you have it. (I am mostly geared toward art stuff, but I am trying to improve my knowledge of programming languages gradually...)

Core Programming:
Java (my first programming language)
C++ (just starting but it is so similar to Java)
Ruby (from Ruby on Rails)
Perl (from PHP and some CGI)

Web Dev:
HTML/XHTML (seriously, how could you come here and not?)
CSS (goes along with HTML, the more you know, the more powerful it is)
Javascript (this is so basic now that it should be required with HTML)
PHP (my favorite web dev language)
SQL (the MYSQL dialect)
Ruby on Rails (Made some simple web apps, would like to work more with it)

What isn't mentioned:
Python (I tried it but didn't really like it)
XML (this is not a language, it is practically a file format...)
VB.NET (I tried this but it is more like english then code)
ASP (same thing as VB.NET)

I knew none of this but Java in 2005. January 2006 I got myself into web development (or rather some family members presented me with a project for a web site and I agreed). Since then I have really really enjoyed it. I have not spent a single penny on anything so far. Everything I have done has been free, but I do hope to by a domain and get some hosting soon (I created a Thread in the Hosting Topic Area). I learned HTML and Javascript together, followed by a great PHP/Mysql tutorial that made encouraged me to make a database driven Content Management System for my family (my first ever project). Then I learned CSS, rebuilt the webpage and did learned Ruby on Rails for my next project. With those combined, I dabbled in Linux Programming with Perl and Python, I much perfer Perl because it is like PHP but seemingly more powerful. Finally I am now focusing on C++ because my next college semester requires that and I would like to get ahead in the game.

Enjoy,
Joe P

PHP - before I discover Java...but it's still awesome.
JSP - look at next line
Java - Software Development and Web Applications - my real job
Perl - Ecommerce interface with a large bank
ASP - employer make me do it
C# (little, wish I didn't know it)
bash script - helpful for cron jobs
Javascript - wish they standardize it across all browser
VB 6.0 - Client always want windows applications like the next day
VB.NET - Was a professor, that's what the school wanted as a intro course. LOL
Pascal - because math is fun
LISP - I suprise myself that I like it
C - because I"m old
C++ - because I hat malloc()
html/css - is not even a language
xml - I once saw someone post it as one of their programming skills. LOL
ROM Basic - yes, first published program on AOL before the "web" existed, good old days of BBS

there might be a few more, when you work forever and never sleep, you pick up a few things here and there.

I learned how to program in BASIC in the late 70s on a computer that took up most of the classroom. Yes I am a dinosaur.

I know how to write HTML from scratch on a notepad. I have done parts of sites in flash, but I had a really hard time to understand how the grids and codes worked. I ended up with a much simpler presentation than what I wanted. I can insert php and other codes into pages using a site or program that will code the application for me.

In descending order

- PHP
- HTML/XHTML/CSS (is this considered programming?)
- MySQL
- Oracle
- Javascript
- VB.Net
- Some flash programming, mainly use it for animations and designing

I know quite a bit of Basic, about 8 or so years ago my aunt gave me an old NC PC8201 that's somewhere around my age (23) so I pretty much learned Basic from playing around with it and reading the books that came with it.

It quit awhile back but it was a fun learning experience, I would like to fix it one of these days! Thats about the only programing language I know but I am learning PHP, it seem to me once you know one the rest are alot easier to learn.

Of course I also know HTML but like someone here said, can that really be considered a programing language?

Perl for the last 9 years. I'm not sure I still remember other languages good enough.

I don't mention HTML (as well as XML) because these are markup languages.

I know the language of Ozzu. It is quite a basic programming language. I started to learn this previously unheard of language when it was reccomended to me by a very small, skinny white pasty looking person with a lot of stubble. he looked like he had not seen the sun in an eternity. And so I strived forward ever eager to learn this new language.

I started by learning the most important word. HELPPPPPPPP!

Next word was MEEEEEEEEEE!

The list goes on but I can now manage quite a few phrases:

1. F***** help me.
2. Help me now.
3. I hate css.
4. XML is s***.
5. Can I have a new monitor as the last one grew wings and flew out the window.
6. The Polish did it to me!
7. div, means something quite different in the UK.
8. Syntax, like tampax but only the gory version.
9. h ref, like her ref but only h ref is ignored by google more.
10. H1, if only.
11.H2 like H1 but with two women! Again if only!

That's about it for now.

Don't take offence just my sense of humour.

Pete
