I'm not seeing that righ now on my sites, but with all the changes google is making right now, maybe now isn't the best time to be checking. Who knows, the PR could be dances as you check :)

I'll take a look if you post (or pm) which site you see this on.

Things are not entirely normal yet, and I'm not sure if they are still changing today, but I hope so. The search results are different from yesterdays. Google has made a change to there algorithm, which is why this looks more like a dance than the updates we have been getting lately. My site that dr...

You only get paid for clicks, not for impressions. Google adsense tries to show the most relevant ads to for your page, but it's not perfect. If most of your impressions are on your home page which contains a bit of everything, then the ads won't be relevant, so nobody will click. In your case I wou...

I have not taken the time to crack it, but I can tell you that there is an extra digit that needs to be removed before you CRC it. Once you do crack it, you must add the feature to the mozilla toolbar yourself, understanding that this is against googles TOS. Because of the open source nature of the ...

One of my sites disappeared, so this very much sucks for me. Hopefully it comes back soon!

Google removed the sj data center last month, and added 3 new ones: gv, -kr, and -mc.

Google does have an office in NY, but I don't know if they do any development there.

I wrote my own tool to do this using the Google API, but noticed that once in a while the results are slightly different between what the API returns and what I get when I search. I would think this tool uses the Google API, and will be plagued by the same problems if you study it enough. Anybody el...

Try to get listed in any directories you can. Then try to find a few sites that will exchange links with you.

Have you tried re-writting your ad? Make it more eye-catching?

Maybe you should go after some smaller more targeted keywords?

Just ideas

Although we can vote right now, the poll shows that 100% of us like the new look, which seems accurate :)

I agree that the content should be written for the reader first, then optimized for the search engines. I wrote a site in the wrong order once (for SE's first) , and when I checked my logs I saw that most people were staying on the site for less than 15 seconds. After re-writting the just the headli...

Don't hold your breath hoping for the's version of the google toolbar to include PageRank. Since anyone can download the source code, if they did add it then there would be no secrets on how Google encodes the URL and sends the Page Rank. Then all sorts of ppl would write scripts that au...

I know Google has stated that they are trying to avoid corruption by doing the auction, but I would think that the point is to get the most money out of the opening. Aren't they going public just to be Overvalued?

That is a cool and funny tool. It appears to be doing a search in google for your name (or what you typed in) and the word is in quotes like this "deadz is" and the returning sentences from the snippet. You also get funny results doing the query with 'was' or 'has'. Bill Gates has $1,000 Bill Gates ...

I too have gained in PR and in back links. As for Google updating the search results, I have seen two different times that the search results do a big change. First, about a week before we see the updates in the toolbar. In both September and October, my site Wheels N' Rims saw major search ranking ...

I'm sure that google has enough cool ideas left to increase their revenue on a regular basis for sometime, so their stock will kick butt. If not, enough ppl think that way, so they'll kick butt anyway. Of course it seems like they are #1 and have nowhere to go but down, but until somebody looks read...

It also makes it easier for webmasters, as I don't bother making sure every change looks good in Netscape and the others anymore. As long as it looks how I want it to in IE then I'm happy.

You should cut your 1500 words into 3 pages. In the book 'Google Hacks', which was written with the google engineering team, they have a breakdown how to build a google friendly site. The following point is the only place they mention length. Build one page of content (between 200-500 words) per day...

I'm glad to see that so far in the poll, nobody wants gun ads. I would think that guns are a much easier market to turn down for Google, as porn is a huge chunk of the internet. I doubt the online gun industry is 1/100th the size of the online porn industry.

I certainly have noticed huge increases in traffic (like 2 or 3 times) for some keywords when I got bumped up from 8th to 1st. I've also seen boosts like 1.5 times when going from 3rd to first if their was a competing relevant sites ahead of me. I have often wondered about what the averages are, lik...

I don't think that adding special characters around your title text such as (¯`·._.·Keyword·._.·´¯) will help you either in rankings or in clickthrough. If you do a search for a highly competitive term, such as 'search engine optimization', you won't find stuff like that. So from a ranking point of ...

Monkey Island .... nice call. I wouldn't put it in my top 3, but good memories.

1. Golden eye (n64)
2. Age of Empires II (PC)
3. Baseball stars (original nintendo)

So you had to get external links to each of your subdomains before you saw them ranking well? That makes sense. Are your subdomains 1 page each, or do they have pages?

I didn't go through your Signature site, as I can't read German :D

Post Posted: September 30th, 2003, 6:50 pm

So subdomains don't need to be lots of pages to be successful then. I was worried that some search engines might penalize for abusive use of subdomains, but it doesn't seem that way. As for the example, I know that it's not a very competitive term, but I still thought google would only show two page...

Hi, I'm wondering about people's experience with using subdomains and the effects in google rankings. Many times that I've seen a site with lots of subdomains doing really well, it seems spammish to me. Right now there is an interesting case for this in google. Enter the search term "sales job wante...

It appears as though google has updated the PR in the toolbar, and backwards links. Atleast 2 of my sites were updated today.

Post Posted: September 17th, 2003, 11:22 am

Google certainly has changed the way they update things, and the google dance is a thing of the past. You'll see a lot of small changes every day now, as google spiders so much now, and updates the cache for a lot of pages everyday, or every second day. Page Rank and backward links still don't updat...

Thanks ... that's totally awesome! I'm looking forward to trying it out, hopefully this week!

Your script takes a spread sheet or text file full of URLs and computes the checksum, sends it to google as IE would, and then records the plain text page rank that comes back? Pretty cool.

Post Posted: September 15th, 2003, 11:57 am

Could I be PM'ed on this too? I looked breifly into doing this, and started to watch the packets. I looked at the checksum, and tried to crack it by only trying the usual checksums, but didn't get it. I would like to learn how you cracked it!

Post Posted: September 12th, 2003, 10:40 am

Sometimes it takes even longer than that depending on how deep into their site your link is posted, and how frequently they get spidered by google.

I think we're do for an update though .. so maybe another week??

Post Posted: September 11th, 2003, 11:52 am

hmmm ... maybe if you start a thread in the programming section, some of your readers will develop a new search feature

Post Posted: September 11th, 2003, 2:08 am

Adsense is so new that it still lacks reporting features like your revenue per site, for those who run multiple sites. With more reporting, it would make finding which type of adsense banner works best and where to put it on your site.

Still a great tool

Post Posted: September 9th, 2003, 11:15 am

If you're looking for a way to calculate your sites PR, so that you can test different link structures, there are a number of PageRank calculators on the web ... which of course you can find in google. The calculators can take a bit of time to learn, and produce numbers that aren't the same as what ...
