How are you storing the data? Sessions? Database? Is the count of the items achieved differently than the list of items in the query?

you are probably best off to store the vid on the file system and the place the path / vid name in the db...that should make linking easier

There is no real preferred encoding. I find its all application dependent. If you need to support multi-byte characters sets (ie your users are in Asia and require you to support the Big 5 asian characters sets). If your users all exist in the US, the standard iso-8095-1 may be more correct for you....
