Hosting your own site is not really worth the efforts. Just the electricity/ISp costs will be more than a cheap $5 per month host. Please note that most ISPs offer poor upload speed, which translates to slow loading sites for outside users.

Yahoo is cheap, only for the first time users. So better not use them, if you want everything under same roof. Godaddy with some promo codes, or namecheap will workout to be the best.

You might get one from godaddy or 1and1. For godaddy, you may have to pay extra for bandwidth as they come with 500GB. But the rates are cheap, if you go for self managed.

Godaddy is not the best shared host around. They got limitations like email accounts, not using cpanel etc.

I too would second hostgator.

PR is not outdated, it is not just given as much importance as earlier. Still PR is the only indicator of the importance of a page. SERPS will be decided by a number of factors, including PR. Other factors include archor text, title, content, quality of links pointing, age etc.. etc. Get quality one...

A better solution would have been to have some minimum requirement to have a signature/link on signature. Lot of webmasters including me, would appreciate getting a small PR passed back to the site.. hmm...

PHPBB is pretty easy to set up, if you know the basics. You just need to ftp the script, run the configuration script from browser and supply the mysql info(hostname, database name and password) and just a few other parameters. Ask your host if you dont know these.

Adwords doesnt improve your search engine. That is pay-per-cick which doesnt help in any other ways.

You need good old SEO work to inprove your position!
