The forums links could help from both SEO and traffic perspectives but you still are recommended consider using additional methods as well.

In other words more sources could be great instead of only focusing over a single way to drive traffic towards your web pages.

MSN turned into Live and at present it is known as Bing among webmasters. Not much difference though except for the beautiful interface and nice backgrounds.

Yahoo could be similar to Google in some cases like crediting the backlinks pointing at the websites but it could be nice to mention that the on page items like titles and the H tags still work great in Yahoo sometimes.

Sometimes even after reaching the top Google spots, you still need to work on your Yahoo placements as well and many times Yahoo is complex as some people believe the on page factors still do matter a lot.

You can find a lot of top ranking websites in their niches which are selling do follow links and nothing happens to their placements in Google.

One thing could be true and that is Google devaluing some of the paid links strength instead of dropping the rankings of the sellers.

You can find a lot of top ranking websites which never appear anywhere in those two directories.

Do not forget this fact that even after getting listed there, they are just two links and you will need a lot of links for having top ranking websites.

Manual checking of the SERPS is always the best option because even the Google Webmaster Tools are not that accurate when it comes checking the daily rankings.
