Definitely seeing a few new backlinks, but can someone explain why Google shows "1 - 5 of about 17 linking to mydomain.com".

Why does it only show 5? What's up with the other 12?

Figured as much.

Thanks, as always, Vetofunk!

Sounds good. I actually just got added to DMOZ a few days ago :P ... but assume that will take some time to show up, along with some of the other links I've obtained recently. However, looking at the #1 site listed, I'm not too impressed with a PR4 and 5 backlinks. http://sportsgambling.about.com/cs...

Not at all. The pages are http://www.runyourpool.com and http://www.runyourpool.com/nfl-football-pools.cfm. Keywords are NFL Confidence Pool Without additional "-" keywords they show up on the 7th and 5th pages respectively. When additional "-" keywords are added, they show up #1 and #2 overall. Tha...

Not sure if I'm sandboxed or not. But clearly something is going on in terms of filtering.

My site is about 7 months old. However the terms I'm looking for are on new pages (2-3 weeks old).

Had great positioning with other keywords that dropped significantly in mid-March.

Thoughts?

Thanks Vetofunk.

Frustrating, but what else is new.

I wish!!! Right now I am #51. After I add "-adksfa - aqerqwe ..." to my keywords I show up as #1 and #2. Obviously I'm trying to figure out why ... and how to get my sites positioned as they are when I add "-adksfa - aqerqwe ...". Is this something that will resolve itself in time and I will have th...

Thanks vetofunk. I'm still confused (not really surprising I suppose). For my keywords, I'm #1 (and #2) with the filter off. With it on, I'm #51. So the thought is that I need more links in order to "turn the filter off" for a normal search (without additional "-" terms)? Or is this a time-based iss...

Have read alot about this lately, but ashamed to say I still don't get it. Can someone explain the concept to me? Also, people have mentioned that searching Keyword1 Keyword2 -adf -asdfa -qreqwr -tytyut -bvxbv -eqreqw -erqwrqew -nbncb will bypass the "sandbox filter". What does bypassing that filter...

Sorry on #2. I was under the impression that when a site was deleted ("rejected"), some notification was sent to the submitter. Evidently that is not the case, as told to me by a Meta. Strange on #1, as I have added a site and edited the description of another. The changes show up at the bottom of m...

Vetofunk, Apparently the authentication db is screwy right now. So since, I have no forum access, can I ask a few more DMOZ editing questions? 1. Should a site I have added (or modified) appear immediately in editors.dmoz.org? I made a few edits and have seen no changes there (or live). How long doe...

Had a feeling I wasn't describing the problem well. Let me give this another shot: I am able to login to the dashboard without a problem using the username and password contained in my acceptance e-mail. I can edit my category fine, which is http://dmoz.org/Games/Gambling/Sports/Software_and_Tools/P...

Finally got accepted as a DMOZ editor 8) Saw that the editor forums were down. Seem to be back up now, but what should I be using for a U/P? Tried my regular editor login but no luck, and didn't see a registration within the forum itself. Is the forum up but not functional yet? Any idea? Thanks.

Anyway a DMOZ listing is not essential, and Google slowly appear to be turning their back on DMOZ (which is a good thing)

Interesting statement. Hadn't heard this. What are you basing this on?

really, only a few days, huh?

Been a week and a half with no word, and I did confirm my email address. Is it worth asking in the "Become an Editor" forum or is that just a waste of time?

Post Posted: April 16th, 2004, 7:24 am

vetofunk (or others), how long did it take you to get approved as a DMOZ editor? I'm only waiting a week so far, but just curious how long I should expect. I understand they say "a few minutes to several weeks", but was wondering the average response time. Seems the Meta's at DMOZ would want to make...

Axe,
I understand that content is king. Just looking for those little added advantages you know?

Anyone else have any thoughts one way or the other?

Alright, not a newbie, but a newbie-like question  Is there a benefit to having keywords in your filename. If so, how much? For example, my page is about dogs and cats. Is it an advantage to have http://www.mydomain.com/dogs-cats.htm instead of http://www.mydomain.com/pets.htm. Also, if there ...

Well, I figure I'll submit an app and see what happens. Been a Web App developer for years and used to be an Editor for a legal publishing company, so maybe that'll help ... maybe not

If I can help the backlog that's been frustrating me even a little bit, it'll be worth it.

vetofunk,
Curious how much time one needs to devote to be an effective DMOZ editor? Is it something you'd recommend? Thoughts?

Thanks

Post Posted: April 7th, 2004, 5:30 am

vetofunk,

Posted and got the reply ...

"The submission is awaiting editorial review."

Is 3 months an unreasonable amount of time to wait? What are my next steps?

Post Posted: April 6th, 2004, 6:07 pm

you've been a big enough help already, and I really appreciate it. Will post tomorrow and see what I can find out.

Matt

Glad I asked ... yikes!

Post Posted: April 6th, 2004, 12:59 pm

vetofunk, No, I have not gone through resource-zone.com (saw your earlier post which linked deeper but I was confused as to where I was ... doesn't take much). Would the "submission forum" be the place to go to check on submission status? Seems likely, but the last thing I want to do as a newbie the...

vetofunk, Thanks for your responses. Should have mentioned that it is not this specific site that is my concern. Rather, my concern is an algorithm that would "see" that site as the 5th most relevant. In my limited experience, dealing with DMOZ is like having a conversation with a stuffed animal. Yo...

Post Posted: April 6th, 2004, 10:44 am

Agree that it is not that common a phrase, however, just about EVERY other site of the 2.5 Million are more "optimized" than that listing (including title tags including the term, meta, the term in the body, content, etc.). That one has nothing. HAD something at one point, but thought the reason for...

Johan007,

If it's not the case, how do you explain that ranking?

Post Posted: April 5th, 2004, 8:47 pm

Whatever it is, it is the biggest hole in Google's algorithm I've seen. A shame and enough to get me more bitter than I already am.

Any other thoughts?

Post Posted: April 5th, 2004, 1:15 pm

Thanks for your responses. OK, I understand that DMOZ listings can greatly affect rankings. However, the page has nothing to do with March Madness. No text. No meta. No links. NO NOTHING. The last time it did (according to archive.org) was Nov. of 1992. So is Google ignoring the irrelevance of the p...
