Hi all, Ever since I've gotten into systems administration I've been told that I shouldn't have X Windows on a production server as it just adds another possible source for vulnerabilities. However I'm planning to deploy a test Linux application server running FreeNX and one of the requirements for ...

Hy all, I have a Intrusion.com PDS 2300 system. It has a standard CPU, harddrive, motherboard/chipset etc. It was basically intended to be a firewall, but it has no video/keyboard/mouse. The only way to communicate with it is either through the net or through a serial port. I'm basically trying to s...

Hi, I'm setting up Moodle on an OpenBSD Web server and I'm having trouble running the mimeTeX binary. The binary itself works (compiled it on a test machine) but Moodle uses:
PHP Code: [ Download ] [ Select ]
 system("/path/to/mimetex", $return) ;
To make the call. I've also copied the linked libraries to the p...

As long as your ftp server is setup properly and your firewall and/or router is setup so that it allows remote connections to your server it should be no problem. There is two ways depending on your existing network. If you don't have a router then all the other person has to do is using an ftp clie...

As long as everything is installed properly and configured properly there should be no reason why you can't have a triple boot system. One caveat is that you should probably prepartition with a triple boot system in mind. If your not willing to lose everything right now I would suggest you partition...

Thanks that did the trick.

I thought the NFS default settings were to mount the exports as read only and you had to explicitly define read-write.

But oh well :D at least its working.

Hey all, I've just started playing around with NFS and I can get it to export as ro however I cannot export it as rw. I've use the simplest syntax in exports both: /var/www/htdocs 192.168.0.0(rw) and /var/www/htdocs -rw 192.168.0.0 And neither works. However when I replace it with ro it does. Does a...

For me with production I use OpenBSD just because of their great code auditing effort. For a desktop I sort of migrate a bit, I started off with SuSe and I really liked it for its ease of use but I dislike KDE and Gnome just cause they're big. I installed Fluxbox etc on it but I still didn't like it...

It's a pretty good distro. It's what I'm using right now after switching from Gentoo. Pretty much the only reason I switched from Gentoo it takes too long to install patches/upgrade packages. Ubuntu is great as a desktop distro because it supports both Gnome and KDE (kubuntu). And has a pretty good ...

I believe the most popular one right now is Yellow Dog Linux. However I can't say anything about it as I've never used it nor have I ever used a mac :( (I'm too poor...)

Also have you changed anything recently? Or is this a fresh install with a kernel panic?

It'll also help to know which distribution your using as this might be a more widespread problem with your distro.

With regards to your second question with SuSe you would install it via YAST. Or you can find RPM's for SuSe online for the programs you want.

If you can't find any of those for your program (or if you prefer) you can also compile the program from source code.

I hope this helps.

You may also want to try out aMSN that is striclty a MSN Client with a interface more similar to the actual MSN, and if you get the CVS version there is also webcam support.

Good luck.

What they mean is that the 64.32.104.160 IP is most likely for her router. This is the thing that connects her network to the internet. The 10.0.0.2 IP then is the IP for her computer inside the network. What port forwarding does is that you connect the the router say at: 64.32.104.160:3389, where 3...

If your just planning on playing around with a webserver then Mandrake(Mandriva is the latest version) should be fine. It's probably also a good introduction to using Linux also. You might want to try FreeBSD, Slackware, Debian, and Gentoo when your planning on building a more serious webserver. Goo...
