Hey gang, for those of you that have been requesting a lighter theme I got to see a teaser tonight of what Bigweb has been working on. I'm a diehard on this old theme of ours because I've been looking at it for three years, but I think you're gonna like it. As soon as he switches I'm gonna switch and I never thought I would. Don't expect it tomorrow or the next day. I know Bigweb is going to make sure it's spot on before it's available but I can tell you what he's working on is pretty darn slick! I mean seriously slick!

For those who wonder why it is taking so long, Bigweb is virtually doing away with the table structure in the stock phpbb theme and customizing it with valid HTML and CSS. And I'm telling you what I have seen so far, I am outrageously impresssed.

Like I said, don't expect it tomorrow, but wow, gotta say I like what I'm seeing!

Believe me, he handed me a cookie tonight too and snatched it away, but in all seriousness, I only posted this to let you know that it's not a pipe dream. He is seriously working on a lighter theme for us. p.s. there's some "eye candy" / chocolates in there as well

I suspect there will be no screenies. I think Bigweb just showed me cause he knew I'd "leak" a little info lol. Just be patient gang. Nothing had been said about it for awhile, so mostly I just wanted to let you know it isn't a forgotten thing and is seriously being worked on. It still may take some time. Bigweb is making significant changes to the templates that I think very few if any have ever done and I don't think he'll release even a screenshot until it's perfect and ready to use.

So, you are the person that caused a mini ozzu rebellion?

It is very cruel playing with peoples emotions in this way. I mean, we all think we are going to get to see a small preview of the new theme only to be tricked into seeing an example of the current theme.

I cried for hours last night.

Well I am not sure I am going to be growing any shrubs or bushes for you guys at ozzu, but I will try to get a new "theme" out hopefully sometime in July.

If you lived closer I really could use the help. I am tired of digging. I pretty much finished my front yard a few days ago. Here is what it looks like now:

Image

I put alot of work into that, put in a sprinkler system, and replaced and moved many plants. The tree is new too. With my backyard I am basically removing alot of rocks and dirt so that I can bring in topsoil and put in more grass.

Anyway I am sure you guys dont really care about this, you are mostly interested in a new theme. Still I could use the help with the yard work! :)

Well I did rent a trenching machine for the sprinkler system. Still all that does is rough up the ground really good. There are lots of big boulders and rocks that I still have to haul out of there. The ground here is very rocky, I don't think I will ever have a mole problem, but it is kind of pain for what I am doing right now. I didn't use the trencher on the front yard because that would have tore my yard to pieces. I mainly used it on the back yard wherever there wasn't grass yet.

I am kind of suprised anybody would have noticed this. Well done Joebert.

The reason I am doing this is because with the new light theme there is much html that is outputted directly from the PHPBB script itself (instead of the theme templates), so I am having to rewrite parts of the PHPBB script so that I can avoid using tables and break tags with the new design. Simply doing everything from the templates isn't enough. So when I make changes to the code over there I also make changes here too, but because of that it forces me to rewrite some of the current theme so that it still looks correct here too. You will probably be noticing even more changes here soon as far as the structure of the html.

I'm a user.js addict. :D
The postTools UL elements are easier to loop through for posts than the name SPAN elements I've been using in the past.

When the new theeme, sees the light, it might be interesting to hold an Ozzu-DOM-API contest for the programmers here.
For example,
Code: [ Select ]
Ozzu = {
 appendPostTool: function(toolNode, callback, watchEvent){
   // Loop through each post in a topic & add a tool by the Edit, Quote, Delete, Ect buttons.
 }
}

//Page loaded

OZZU.appendPostTool(quick_quote, quote_quickly, 'click');
  1. Ozzu = {
  2.  appendPostTool: function(toolNode, callback, watchEvent){
  3.    // Loop through each post in a topic & add a tool by the Edit, Quote, Delete, Ect buttons.
  4.  }
  5. }
  6. //Page loaded
  7. OZZU.appendPostTool(quick_quote, quote_quickly, 'click');

If there was a standard API for extending Ozzu that would work in, Firefox-Greasemonkey / Opera-user.js / Others-I-don't-know-about, then an Extending Ozzu forum in the Extra category might be plausable, I think AoI members are good candidates to moderate such a forum, approving posted extensions as not being spyware/ect.

Allright cowkiller. To answer one question you asked earlier, everyone seemed to miss that I made a comment in joebert's post in the general board that, yes, the mods are finally reviewing the new design to give feedback to Bigweb.

And just to wet your whistle, here's all I can show you at the moment (and I don't technically have permission too. But I swear on my father's grave, this is a real screen cap from the new design. It's just a sneak peak mind you and I can only show you the header. But it is straight from the new stuff. (Notice the difference in the upper right.)

You will also notice that the header is slightly different from the current header as well as the portion ATNO/TW pointed out with the stuff on the right. Nothing major there, but there is a slight difference.

None that I know of, but I'm surprised that some genious has never conceived the idea to put mustard and ketchup in the same bottle. One squirt and you got your hotdog prepped and ready!

Somebody needs to give me a bonus for that idea!

Ahh, but you would ruin the flavours by mixing them to early. As such, one of those bottles that hold two cehmicals with a barrier would be nessisary.

Also, someone should invent a squeeze bottle that has a spill defender (maybe an air bubble), so if you drop it you don't get ketchup all over the place. AND you could market the idea as "Premature discharge without condoments"

Yeah I usually like more ketchup than mustard. So the bottle should be built in a way that lets you tweak the ratio. Say 2 to 1. However if the amount of ketchup and mustard are equal inside the bottle than the ketchup will dry up first. So maybe when you buy in the store you can buy different versions with different preset ratios :)

That is not going to work so good when I have people over who want equal amounts of each, or maybe more mustard than ketchup. I think I will just continue to buy them separately :)

It would have impressive commercial applications however. For example, a hot dog vendor (or other condiment dispensing retailer who would buy mass quantities) could refill a mustup bottle which allows end users to set their own ratios (through some kind of exit flow limitation system).

edit: replaced ketchturd with mustup cause it just sounded wrong

ketchup would almost always come out slower. It's a given. Of course people would never read any instructions to shake first. All in all it's still a mighty fine concept. Much like black and white/light and dark.

Okay here is a real screenshot of the new Ozzu theme:

http://www.ozzu.com/examples/ozzu_preview01.gif

Although added alot of noise. As time goes on I may release more screenshots with less noise applied if the demand for me to do that is great :)

If you look really close at this screenshot you can actually see some of the design elements in the new look. You should also be able to find four or five colors used in it. It might also help to stand back about 10 feet from your monitor.

Let's make a deal.

The less noise there is in the next screenshot, the longer I wait to find out where the nearest grocery store to your house is & poop in the next box of Cheerios you're going to buy.

For instance, if there's no noise, I'll wait forever to poop in your Cheerios.

Do we have a deal ? :D

I eat toast in the morning... so you'd just make whoever wakes up in my house and decides they are hungry for cheerios very angry at me.

But besides that, you can't make a time to poop vs noise amount scale with only on point (you would have to have at least 2, assuming a linear relationship)

And forgive my ignorance, but what was the original connection between noise and wanting to poop in my cereal?

Geez Bigweb, I just caught this updated post with your noisy screeny. Man I'm just thinking I could have used POVRay or something and done a stereogram and that would have really been the ticket. As it is, I can just barely make out the current ad you have on the new site through the "noise".

Would it be more efficient to add a little Ozzu to alot of noise ?

I don't know how much Ozzu all that noise got added to, so I can't determine if there was any waste of Ozzu in the process.

Well, if the candle in your avatar got knocked over, it would be pretty sad.
If you had a dream about a party, that wouldn't be sad at all, well, unless a fight broke out, that would be sad, unless they were able to resolve their differences, then it's back at not sad again.
Shall I go on meman, or would you care to share your dream ?

Actually, it's really come a long way since then, and it's hard to appreciate all that Bigweb has put into it so far without seeing it all working. What he did with style sheets and the code is quite impressive. Essentially I believe he's rewritten every template that comes with a theme. No more tables!

Not to mention it's also why it's taking awhile. Here's just a tiny example. The first example is the code for just the OZZU header as it currently is. The second is code from the new source for the same header section. Quite impressive (and standards compliant I might add).

Code: [ Select ]

The speed of light == 299 792 458 m / s

It has traveled through the galaxy and it is arriving soon. Be prepared. At any moment you could see the "light".

It's almost here, my friends, and will probably arrive before Labor Day.

Then Bigweb can rest from his Labors.

btw. Everyone will see the light. When the light reaches you, if you can't handle the light, or get confused by the light, or have problems with the light, you can always switch back to darkness, by switching to the smartDark theme in your profile. Hopefully switching to the dark side will only be temporary. Darth Vador tried it, and he finally saw the light.

We've worked out the major bugs in the light theme. There's bound to be minor issues. If you have issues with the light theme when it arrives, then create a new post in this suggestions forum to report it. Bigweb and the modstaff have methodically tried to cover every aspect, but there's bound to be minor details.

When the light arrives, please refrain from posting cosmetic feedback for now. Bigweb will give you that opportunity. However, critical bugs that inhibit proper operation of OZZU need to be reported immediately.

may be big can add it to the theme list but not make it default untill all the bugs are worked out. big could also add "BETA" to the logo, untill the bugs are gone..

also is there a date in mind for this?

The plan is to change it to the board default style, at which time Bigweb will force switch all users to the new theme. At that time, you'll have the option to switch back to the existing one in your profile, if you prefer this one. All users will be able to switch back and forth.

the tops of the tables seem a little thick.. i like the rollover color on the side menu.. maybe a little more faded colors on that side menu(a little lighter).. thats it for now!

where is the top menu? i cant go back to the main forum.. eeek!?!?!

edit:

the vote table is messed up in this post http://www.ozzu.com/suggestions-comments/report-member-button-t68366.html
and also the results could be centered.. just a idea..

this is much better. the top banner seems alittle out of place and it clashes a bit, but overall the new theme is ftw.

k, when you look at the polls in firefox [both 1.5 and 2.0 beta]
they look like this image is too big to post here
but theyre fine in internet explorer.

Visually I much prefer SmartDark, though programmatically the new theme rocks.

Will darker versions of the new theme via css be available in the future? I'd be interested in seeing the new theme with SmartDark coloring.

For now I'll stick with the original, but great work BigWeb.

remember in smartDark how there were "levels and sub-levels" that represented the forums and sub-forums you were in. i miss those links. they were quite useful and better than pressing "home" every time i wanna get back the the main page with all the sub-forums.

Yes, I'd have to agree.

I've been giving the light theme a further try out. It's growing on me, albeit slowly.

One thing I'd also suggest, would be to have the forum listing in the right navigation, to mirror the structure of the homepage forum listings. It's quite difficult determining where each forum is.

For example, have
[GENERAL TOPICS]
General Discussion
Announcements and Rules

[Wesbite Design & Development]
Wesbsite Design Forum
...etc...

Right now General Discussion is half-way down the right navigation, it would be so much easier to use the right navigation if it matched the actual forum structrure.

When i came to ozzu (with the new design)
I thought the CSS wasn't loading.
Then I noticed certain features which require CSS.
Confused, till I saw this post
I personally dont like the new design, I think it is cos I am used to the old black one. (I aint a lover of change)
GIve me a week or so, and I will probs like it.

Soz, cant find the edit button?

After looking at the 2, A couple of thinks I think should be added to light, from the darker version

On the darker version, i can tell at a glance for new posts, I think it is to do with the text color or something

Also with the list view, its quicker to find posts with 0 replies (if I am busy, I tend to glance for 0 replies to see if I can help them)

And the Whos Watching at the top of the forum.
This is handy if I need a question answered, I keep an eye on there.

And also when I am waiting for replies, I can check the number read, at a glance

See its not just the deisgn thats changed, its funcions as well

Yes, and that might be available very soon as the only thing I will need to change is the CSS file to create a new dark version of this theme. There are definetely already plans for this.

remember in smartDark how there were "levels and sub-levels" that represented the forums and sub-forums you were in. i miss those links. they were quite useful and better than pressing "home" every time i wanna get back the the main page with all the sub-forums.

The link is still there, its on the top right now. It will say something like:

Back to General Forum, etc.

Is that what you are referring to?

I think that would be useful/better in the bottom-right also, so when you're done reading the last post it is right there and you don't have to scroll-up to get to it.

What would be nice is once you click the "Back to ... Forum" You should have a "Back to Forum Index" link.

Yes that is what I thought you referred to. If you go here:

http://www.ozzu.com/examples/navscreenshot.jpg

You will see both those links still exist that you circled. I circled where they are on the new theme in the link above.

I can accept change, but I'm not sure if I like this. Too bright, don't need all the crap on the side, doesn't have the same feel.

I story I once heard

This guy became the new boss for a factory, and he was shown around.
At the end of the day, the workers complete a form, Progress Sheet.

On the top right of the form was a box, which they would write in '0'

The boss asked the workers what the '0' is for. And they said, they dont know, they have just been told to put 0 in the box

The new boss looked at the form, and he see some text above the box, but from photocopies, it had faded

He looked for the original document, and noticed that above the box, where they put 0, it said "How many Air Raides Today"

This was from the World War, and had never been updated

Moral of the story, Sometimes things have to change, as the time changes

the links need to be fixed. although already visited links are visible,unvisited links look like normal text. While it is not hard to decypher a http://....com, links that are embedded into text are invisible.

for example, if I want to send someone to http://google.com most people can figure it out, but try and find the other link in this sentence.

EDIT: you are also missing a link to the test forum on the side bar, unless that is on purpose

Both links are clearly visible to me (underlined and a different color). What browser are you using, and can you provide me a screenshot please.

I'd say it's pretty easy. It's underlined and an olive colour.

Re: CowKiller

I agree
After posting
the HERE is the same color as the text, unless you hover over

With Regards to the PM I sent BigWebmaster RE: Idea
When I mentioned about the Watched Topics, It is Simular to the Watched Topics on the side
Except what I was on about, is it ONLY shows unread posts that you have posted in, or Marked as Watch.
So if you have seen it, then it does not show on the list
So when you are active posting
You can view in there, Ahh someone has replied to X
THis could be an option to turn off Emailing then

What I also think would be a cool idea
A chance for people to Add Favorites for Topics
For example
I am reading through the forums, someone is stuck, and someone else replies. I think thats cool, I might use that soon.
I can add to favs, then later, click on when I need it, I dont have to ask again, I can click on that, and have the solution
(I know I can bookmark it, but I have like 200 bookmarks for things, tutorials, Cool tricks, Research things for other sites ect)

Keep up the good work

Easy

It's the letter "I" and I can see it clear as day.

You should try spotting the "period" spam links us mods have been doing lately on smart dark theme.

Yes, I agree. Another example is BigWebs siggy

'Webmaster Resources
UNFLUX.net - Quality Web Hosting'

where Webmaster Resources and UNFLUX.net appear to be plain text but are actually lnks when you hover over them.

Your layout seems to keep breaking at some parts for me on I.E. 6. Fine on FF though.

Yes I have noticed that on smaller resolutions. Having problems figuring out how to fix that one. It only does it in IE.

Anyone else agree with this?

ALSO:

  • Under 'Watched Topics' when you click on the name of the Topic, nothing happens. The target is actually the watched_topics.php page.
  • In many parts os the board; Moderators, Super Moderators, etc no longer have distinctive coloring for their usernames. Is this by design?

Yes I do. Soon the forum on the left will match the order that the current menu is.

Well some parts don't have coloring that is correct. For example on the viewforum page there is a spot which says:

Quote:
Moderators: ATNO/TW, musik, Daemonguy
Users browsing this forum: lucassix

The moderator list is all one color, and the Users browsing this forum actually do have colors applied to them depending if they are moderators or not.

You are welcome to point out specific areas you think are incorrect just in case I have missed something.
