i think the option to float new posts/popular new posts/etc... to the top of the listings for topics would be helpful, i once found a new post buried on the 34 page, dont ask why i was all the way there, but it is sometimes a bit inconvenient to find a new topic in the middle of the forum

The board already does that. However, the read history here is pretty extended and you can have quite a lot of posts available as "unread". What probably happened was at some point you inadvertaintly overlooked that one and it just scrolled off the main page. But on a normal basis, it does exactly what you are asking.
