And hence another problem:

Dumb question; do you have ncurses (and therefore libncurses) installed?

Ah, found a bug report - http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=70700

Basically, either emerge ncurses again with the unicode USE flag, or remove unicode from your USE flags.
