Hye everyone,
I'm planning to build a router, i dont know which platform to use. Linux or router?
Can anyone give the idea how is the different when i use linux or freebsd?

Both will serve you equally well. Is there any particular reason you're choosing to build a router rather than just purchase one?

No, it just for my project. I just want to know the pro and cons for both of them.

Besides, i want to know which platform are more reliable?

I prefer FreeBSD, of course.

Also if by router you also intend to use packet filtering (nee "firewall"), then there's none better than pf, developed by the OpenBSD team.
Runs perfectly well on FreeBSD and is infinitely configurable.

I am yet to try that little project. I'm just too lazy to go and turn off the dhcp in my wireless router and then set up my linux box as a dhcp server and all that stuff. I 'spose all I gotta do is just do it. I think I would rename my access point "FREE INTERNET HERE!" just to lure people in, then use some open source IDS to see when people connect or use wireshark to see how long they surf the web or something. Fun fun fun!
