eclipse -- extensible IDE for C/C++, Java, Perl, JavaScript, C#, Python, PHP,Ruby, XML, HTML, etc (also runs on Windoze)

It's not really pointless, since not all distros come with it out of the box. And some of the other applications listed come with many distros as welll.

there are bittorrent programs like azures(sp?) (search bittorrent on sourceforge.net) that will work with linux, can't think of any other ones off the top of my head.

I think DCGUI-Qt is even better than DC++.

Other applications:

XMMS instead of Winamp/Foobar
AbiWord instead of MS Word
Evolution instead of MS Outlook
XChat instead of mIRC
Mozilla Firefox instead of Internet Explorer

...and so on...

OK, it's not GNU but I have a bit of a love affair with Opera.. No, I'm not religious about it.. On Windows I have been using Maxthon as an IE replacement.

I'd have to agree with about http://www.eclipse.org truly a great IDE framework

Some more of my open source favourites:

KBear for ftp.. a 'tabbed' ftp client. http://kbear.sourceforge.net/
Webmin (could I call it the Linux mmc equivalent?) http://webmin.com
Nagios (is there a Windows equivalent?) service/host monitoring software http://www.nagios.org/
Cacti / RRDtool (great for graphing stats of whatever you want) http://www.raxnet.net/products/cacti/

I remember my very first Linux install.. I never knew anyone who had played with Linux.. I had to choose between KDE and Gnome and didn't know wtf they were:

I give KDE the thumbs up as a Window manager

while we are at it

If you are into "Virtual Machines" then check out http://pearpc.sourceforge.net/ to emulate the Macintosh and install MacOSX on Linux or Windows .. comparable to Microsoft Virtual PC ?

For P2P on Linux, you can't go past http://www.amule.org/ I think lmule is available also

P2P - giFt
has plugins for fasttrack gnutella openft .. opennap i believe. appolon is a kde front end for it. check out the site. if you can get it to work, its great. (although the fasttrack network has almost nothing of use these days.)[/url]

May be I'm stupid, but i can't find anything to watch my DVD, tried VLC but it told me that I need dozen of other rpms in order to install it.

i personally use the bit torrent network and use azureus on my mandrake as the client.

so how come nobody mentioned wine - http://www.winehq.com
for installing those windoze applications that just aren't available on linux.
or for those stubborn people who use linux but still have win apps that they want to use? lol

And of course, winex and cedega (spelled right? maybe its cegeda, I don't remember) versions of wine with directx support. I think they have successfully emulated some popular windows games through it.

There's also the VMWare workstation, which you can install and then setup any version of Windows on it like a normal PC. It does cost money, but last time I checked there was a free beta you could download.

I'm off to switch into Mandrake now. ;P
