what are the best msn clients and filesharing apps for linux. im a limewire fan and i want to use the limewire network but i dont know what to use. and i dont like aMSN. its just to damn clunky for my tastes. also i do alot of iming to my friends cell phones and neither aMSN or Kmes support that.

HUH!? WERE!? i love ut2k4
Linux is user friendly... It's just selective about who its friends are.

pretty sure the installer is on the ut2k4 disks.
if you like limewire, use limewire.
pidgin (formerly gaim) handles msn protocols and does allow im'ing to cell phones.

please dont post a question on a topic thats completely unrelated to your question, start a new forum post.

for such a basic question, do you really think you should be using linux..?
right click somewhere > choose create file.
(O_o)

if you still can't figure it out, google it.

You can use the commercial Windows emulation framework called CrossOver Office on your Linux system to run certain applications, such as Microsoft Office. Check http://www.codeweavers.com for more details. CrossOver Office is based on Wine, which CodeWeavers supports directly.

To install applications that have .msi extension, you use msiexec command with /a option. The following installs the Mobipocket Ebook Reader:
Code: [ Select ]

msiexec /a mobireadersetup.msi

  1.
  2. msiexec /a mobireadersetup.msi
  3.

hi everyone!

i think windows softwares are not needed for linux at all. linux has its own huge software repository.

but its a pity that even after more than a decade of linux being a champion in the OS world there are only few advanced 3d video games available on it. for this very reason most of the linux users (atleast amateur ones) keep their systems on dual boot with windows alongside linux for playing video games.

That wasn't the intent of the thread; championing Windows apps on the *nix framework. The intent I believe was to offer alternatives that exist int he realm of *nix for windows users who have recently converted, tentatively installed or plan to install some form of *nix.

ok.. sorry that i missed the point of this topic  .

in that case i can suggest several apps like OpenOffice and abiword for word-processing as an alternative for microsoft office suite. Gnumeric can replace excel.
(but would you mind yet if i say that playing games like counter-strike and maxpayne (last version) on linux "with WINE" is slow and lagging on average machines :( . i think someone should find a way to port these games to linux! i'm sure many will like to buy such games for linux because at the end of the day we still have to buy any standard linux distribution.. :| )

but i do know some linux games like Eschalon. and yes not to forget quake (try it!) :) .

bye!

I would choose LibreOffice over OpenOffice now that Oracle wants to charge for certain functions in OO.

Why buy a standard linux or Unix distro? Plenty of them are absolutely free (with various regulatory measures based upon the type of license each employ).

I use FreeBSD Unix (itself as a server platform and PCBSD as a desktop); neither charge a fee for use.

yep i like FreeBSD too! I have a console-only version of FreeBSD that i use for basically learning unix commands.
earlier i didn't know much about *nixes and for running certain free *nix based programs on windows i used cygwin. it's a great tool but after some time i realized that moving to linux is simpler!
