what is the best way to check how much cpu load is being used on a linux server.

Top is good, but is there something more direct... simple...

This will give the load,

$uptime

20:55:57 up 10 days, 23:59, 1 users, load average: 1.00, 1.00, 1.00

the last 3 are the avg loads in the last 15, 10, 5 mins. ( or viceversa.. i ain't remember.... just $man uptime , it will sort that pblm too.. )
