I got the same error when I installed a red hat boot loader after I'd installed win98SE and win2K.

To fix, I think I installed win98, then linux, THEN win2K.

I'm soon to begin multi booting win98SE, WinXP and Fedora 4.

98 for older games, Hex Pee for day to day stuff (gaming and web design) and FC4 for the experience and fun of it all.

fixboot / fixmbr will not fix your problem. they will simply restore windows boot loader to the boot sector of the hard drive / mbr.
