Just reinstall linux. While installing select upgrade option. don't select any new package. It will ask you to enter password for root. Just give the password you want.

This ain't Windows.

To get to single user mode, if you're using LILO, type:
Code: [ Select ]
linux single

at the boot prompt and hit ENTER.

If you're using GRUB, hit ENTER at the countdown screen (booting kernel-whatever in 10 seconds...), select your kernel from the menu (the line that starts with "kernel") and hit e. At the end of the line, add:
Code: [ Select ]
single

don't forget the space before the word "single". Hit ENTER, then b

Once you're dropped to a command line, enter:
Code: [ Select ]
passwd

and hit enter to change your root password. You can then either reboot to get back to your regular operating mode, or type:
Code: [ Select ]
init N

Replace N with the right runlevel for your system (either 3 if X doesn't start automatically, or 5 if it does)
