Where are the terminal settings defined??

Also whenever i start my terminal i explicitely have to run it..How do i run it automatically

Uhm... if I read this right you want a .profile to execute -- for lack of a better term -- when you log in.

What shell are you using? If you are using a variant of csh, it's not gonna work. :) That's used in Korn and variants.

Check your shell.
printenv may work --depending again on what shell you are using.
Then look for SHELL= something.
that something will tell you what shell you are using. If it's a derivitive of csh, you use a .cshrc file.
