Hey, I recently bought a new 200Gb harddrive and I installed it. Hardware wise everything looks good.

But when I went to restart, Grub threw out:
Grub 1.5
Loading Grub.....
Error 17

Or something along those lines. Searching through google, most people say it's something wrong with the root(x,y) in my grub.conf but I'm pretty sure it isn't.

My current system is setup as:
/dev/hda1 NTFS Windows XP
/dev/hda2 ext2 /boot
/dev/hda3 extended
/dev/hda4 vfat /Share
/dev/hda5 swap
/dev/hda6 /home
/dev/hda7 /

/dev/hdb is my 200Gb drive

In grub.conf I have for linux:
root (hd0,1)
kernel (hd0,1)/vmlinuz

Note. I'm doing this from memory so it's not absolutely accurate but I'm sure the root(hd0,1) is.

I really hope I don't have to reinstall Gentoo, because compiling seriously takes forever.

Thanks in advance.

your right - gentoo does take forever & a day to install :( (when i finally got it installed, it rendered my xp partition useless and there was something wrong in my grub.conf file so gentoo wouldn't load.. i gave up after trying to fix it for another 2 hours, lol) but my guess is - it doesn't know what to do with your new hard drive. it needs to detect it, but it can't(?) because it doesn't get that far. your new hard drive would be (hd1,0) as there should be no partitions on it.

did you try: grub-install /dev/hda ?
have you checked out this forum post on gentoo's forum?

hope this helps.

Yea I tried grub-install and it didn't work out. Things started getting weird when it would work sometimes for some odd reason, or it would drop me into a grub shell. But more often than not it would just hang at Error 17.

I gave up messing around and booted off the Gentoo Install disk and chrooted into / and then installed lilo. It's been working ever since.

I guess I'll just leave it as an unsolved problem, with a simple work around.

Thanks a lot for your help though.
