Hello folks. I'm trying to install Gentoo on my windows xp pro machine using VmWARE.

I go through the installation process 1 by 1 ( tried this about 5 times ) and once everything seems to be installed and I restart, I get the following error during boot up.

Block device /dev/sda3 is not a valid root device...
The root block device is unspecified or not detected
please specify a device to boot, or "shell" for a shell...
boot() :: _

If anyone can assist, I'd appreciate it!

have a look here.. http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=246788 and http://archives.gentoo.org/gentoo-kernel/msg_00266.xm
see if any of the above help.

it would help to know at what point of the boot process it fails. immediately, after some modules load, if it pauses, whatever little details you think may be helpful :]

Thanks for the reply. Everything went haywire over the weekend so I decided to just use Gentoo as my main operating system instead of windows.

I re-formated my hard drive, and now I'm installing Gentoo on there. Everything works fine now. I got past the point I was getting stuck at using VmWare.

You're done installing already? You must have missed something ;)

I was done installing the operating system. Just not the GUI's and everything else I need for a normal everyday OS. I started compiling fluxbox. Had issues. Now i'm trying KDE. Let's see what happens.

My issue mostly is with the USE variable.
