Help ! How to I identify the remote server OS version ?

I can connect to the remote server with putty,
I would like to ask that, in UNIX command, any command can return me the operating system version that currently in use by the remote server ?

let say in DOS
c:\cmd
Microsoft(R) Windows DOS
(C)Copyright Microsoft Corp 1990-2001.

any similar command in UNIX ???

uname -a is but one of many ways.
