How do i put a file in a directory?

Hi i have a file on my desktop and i want to put it in a directory i was wondering what comands i could use to do this.

what directory? i ask this because most dir's you need to have root privileges to access. but if it was like, /home/you/this/dir instead of /home/you/Desktop then you could do it without root access. but in any case,
Code: [ Select ]
// if root access is needed
su
<password>
// the commands from here on out will be the same
cp /home/your_user/Desktop/file.ext /desired/directory
  1. // if root access is needed
  2. su
  3. <password>
  4. // the commands from here on out will be the same
  5. cp /home/your_user/Desktop/file.ext /desired/directory


to copy and entire dir you would do the same command without the file.ext
