Why can the kernal interact with hardware? That's the point of the OS... abstract out some hardware... you don't care what wires you need to set high/low on your network card to send/receive data... that's the job of the OS and drivers. ...I'd recommend learning some assembly if you're interested... learning how to read/write to/from memory addresses and busses is incredibly useful in figuring out how all that low-level stuff works.

the hardware "connects" to the kernel through the cable on your hard drive ;)
