If you want to kill a specific thread, run "ps aux" to find the process' ID (PID), then run "kill PID" - obviously replace PID with the process' ID number.
If you want to kill all processes of a certain program, for instance Firefox, you can run "killall firefox".

kill -9 PID

If you want to quickly find the PID but don't care about all of it's information, use "ps -e" instead of "ps aux"

yea, thats usually what i do. and if i want to find the PIDs of all instances of a program running OR i just want to know the PID of a specific program and not everyone else, i'll do ps -e | grep progname
