On my laptop I am currently using a dual boot Kubuntu / Winxp setup. I really prefer to use Kubuntu (I'm a fairly new linux user), but I have a problem.

Every time I go to shutdown from Kubuntu, it hangs on the loading screen or power down screen if you will and never shuts off unless I manually force it off with the power button.

I am not sure what could be causing this.

Any ideas?

Run ps -aux or whatever the command is in kubuntu to see what processes are running before you shutdown. Take a guess as to which process might be hanging the machine and kill it first, using the kill command. You can kill one or more, then shutdown and see what happens.

I did ps -aux before shutting down, but I don't really know what I'm looking for. There are so many items listed.

None of them really seem to be taking up my CPU% or Mem.

Here I will show you what the ps -aux brought up:

It appears that you are booting straight to X windows (GUI) Boot the machine as always but before you shutdown hit crtl alt backspace to exit the GUI. The run the shutdown command from the command prompt.
shutdown -h now

Note: I use FreeBSD and it maybe somewhat different but that's the general idea.
