lilo or grub

what one and for what reason

i am currently using lilo

It depends on what you're using it for (you saw that coming, didn't you?)

I think the main difference is that every time you rebuild your kernel, you have to reinstall the bootloader with lilo. That and grub can display a splash image on the kernel selection screen - which you'll probably only see once a year or so.

Lilo is smaller than grub - and it's been around forever. I don't know of any real performance issues with either, and I've never had any issues with one or the other that was related to the boot loader itself.

LILO ca easily modified to add further OS option. I found it difficult in GRUB.
