Ubuntu is surely missing from these links.

http://www.ubuntulinux.org
http://www.ubuntuforums.org
http://www.ubuntuguide.org

The Ubuntu distribution is imho by far the best distro for a beginner. Clearly written support articles are available and the forums are some of the most helpful I have seen.

Ubuntu http://ubuntuforums.org/forum.php

I like Ubuntu a lot. I have been using Linux for about a year and this is my favorite distro. But I don't like the Unity desktop so I had to revert to gnome desktop.

Also Mint is a a fork of Ubuntu and it comes with a built in help feature with live chat. There's always actually people on it. Mint is glitchy with some graphics cards.

I also strongly recommend reading some books on Linux Development as those will give a good understanding the GCC compiler toolchain and how things like Make and Ant work. In case you have to compile something from source. At bear minimum read Linux for Dummies.
