Here is a checklist to see if you should switch to linux.

* If you are a software devolper and want to make some linux apps.
* If you are tired of windows and are ready for a change.
* If you are attempting to run an FTP, Samba or HTTP Server.
* If you want a free OS with tons of free Software.
* If you want a more secure OS with less open ports.

Those would be the main reasons to change to linux. If you are looking to switch to linux and are new to the whole linux scene i would reccomend mandrake. If you are pretty good with linux try gentoo or debian, or even slackware. I would suggest a stage 2 install on gentoo for even intermediate linux users. If you would like to try a stage 1 install and need help please e-mail me.

You need to full understand these things for a stage 1 install on Gentoo.

* How to compile the linux kernel.
* What packages are needed and required for a sucessful linux install.

And just about every aspect of linux and how it works and is run, including filesystem and swap partitions.

I would recommend slackware for the novice linux user who is eager to learn. If you just want a way out of windows, and don't want to learn as many new commands and such, Red Hat and Mandrake a good choices.
