This came from a recent Business Week article on Linux.

Ironically it seems Linux is making a bigger dent in Apple's market holding than they are with Windows.

One of the things that Microsoft does which I think makes a huge difference in thier market share is the amount of computers and software they donate to schools. Most of your college grads have been using Windows from the 1st grade so that is what they are used to and that is what the corporations buy so they don't have to train the users, and then because they are framiluar with it and use it at work the users buy it for thier home PC's as well.

Frankly, I find the above "data" highly suspect, if not dubious.

What exactly were they recording? Desktop home PC's?

If you take into consideration all the serving platforms available on the internet, both commercial and non, I think you will find that number skewed.

Even NetCraft -- a known MS outlet -- reports that 74+% of the Internet's web servers run Apache, most notably on Unix/Linux.
Even when Security space publishes a finding that MS platforms run 49% of web servers, thus skewing the data previously published by NetCraft, they admit that the reasons for the (pseudo) count were multiple hosts at companies running in LPARs or virtual hosted. This is not something that, admittedly, happens much on MS platforms, whose ratio trends more towards the one to one.
As quoted;
Quote:
Apache is heavily deployed at hosting companies and ISPs who strive to run as many sites as possible on a single computer to save costs. Windows is most popular with end-user and self hosted sites, where the host to computer ratio is much smaller.

Further, none of these "studies" takes into account back-end and alternate Internet technologies; case in point, DNS servers.
70% of all DNS servers run bind. While bind is available for MS platforms, I know of no one who does this at the enterprise level. ISC themselves claim instability on said platform.

WebSphere, tomcat, jakarta, lotus, Mysql, Postgres, Db2 -- the list goes on ad nauseam of all the behind-the scenes servers which, I believe in most cases do not run MS.

Keep in mind, I did not intend to do anything other than play devil's advocate here. I think that anyone who asks this sort of question has an agenda and more than likely has already made up their minds -- albeit via misinformed data.

Cheers.

.:shakes head:.

silly microsoft zombie.... to quote Forbes.com,
Quote:
Visit the home of a Silicon Valley software programmer and you'll find two things: Macs and Linux boxes.

To these guys, Windows has become the operating system equivalent of the America Online Internet service--a mass-market product that only appeals to people who don't know any better.

Yup, Linux sucks, that's why I'm still in business migrating company after company over to Linux from Windows with no end in sight.

Gee, I wonder how busy I'd be if Linux didn't suck?
