Uh, huh?

You own a domain name, and are trying to serve that domain off of your machine at home?

Well, yes. Someone needs to be authoritative for your domain, and point at your IP -- though if you're on DHCP, that IP could change.
You may wish to look into dynamic DNS services, such as myserver.org.

If you meant something else, I could not discern it.

This is a very useful guide on DNS (how it works and how to set it up). It applies to a specific registrar, so some of the examples assume you purchased a domain with the registrar, but overall it does a great job explaining how/what to set up DNS

Maybe I am mistaken, but if this is for work and you have this domain and static from your place of employment, why not just ask the company's DNS admin to add this new domain to his/her existing DNS zone file?

I am really not understanding, perhaps.
