i know you guys are probably used to hearing this by now.... but i'm looking to build a linux or unix server, but am unsure of what version to run. I will be using it for storage and also to teach myself the ins and outs of linux. thank you guys in advance, and yes i have not used linux/unix since about 1996

I'd use Arch Linux. It's avery fast, customizable distro, and that's excellent for servers of course.

Arch linux only supports i686, i586 and amd64 computers however, so if you'd happen to have another architecture (or a very fast computer), try gentoo. It's even more customizable, and it runs on almost all architectures. The only problem with it is that you need to compile everything yourself, which takes a lot of time.
