Here is one for Linux gurus out there.

A machine running Redhat 9 crashed (power failure).

When trying to reboot it enters a GRUB terminal prompt. (GRUB>_) It doesn't enter the linux boot up phase at all (press i for interactive what what)
When trying to load the kernel from inside GRUB (kernel /vmlinuz blah blah blah) manually it says "Error 25: Error Reading from disk"

Now having seen this error in windows before it usually means the disk is damaged and/or the data is laying on bad sectors.

The only diagnosis I could come to is that the kernel is sitting on bad sectors (or part thereof)

Any ideas?

Looks like it.

Though I suppose there's a small chance that it's grub.conf that is hosed.

You can test that by inserting the red hat cd's and doing an upgrade, but don't specify any packages. It should reinstall grub.

If you have data you want, you could always boot into sometihng like Knoppix of Freesbie and mount the driuve to extract the data, then fsck, etc. the drive to check for errors.

Good luck.
