You should really upgrade that to something more recent, FC5 has been out for quite some time now.

To your issue, right click the speaker in the upper right hand corner and select "Open Volume Control" and make sure it's not simply muted.

well, first you have to make sure that the right outputs aren't muted. did you try what this suggested? otherwise, open up a terminal and enter: alsamixer , that will display different sound outputs and what volume they are. scroll through each one with the <- and -> arrow keys, to unmute something press the 'm' key, to increase volume press the ^ arrow, to decrease volume press the v arrow. to get out of it, press escape. go through and try unmuting / turning up different controls...any of them that would have an effect on your sound should only be the first couple that you see, depending on your sound card.

mm...i dont completely understand what you're saying, but i get the important parts. lol
http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_core_3 ... ml#MPlayer
do the steps described at this site and you'll have the codecs installed to play the media files you desire.

search your preferred system update utility (yum/apt/smartpm) for w32codec and have it installed. i do believe installing this codec will allow you to play avi/mpg files in mplayer so try opening the files in there. if you dont have mplayer installed, try it in xine or totem or whatever else you use...however, personally i would not use real player in linux :]

Use totem or totem-xine for this, it should support mpegs out of the box.

have you installed yum or apt? if not, http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_core_3 ... s.html#Yum
follow those instructions to install yum or the instructions for apt are beneath the ones for yum. after the program is installed, open a terminal and enter
Code: [ Select ]
su
(enter your root password just as you did before)
if you installed yum
yum -y install totem
or
yum -y install totem-xine

if you installed apt,
apt-get install totem
OR
apt-get install totem-xine
  1. su
  2. (enter your root password just as you did before)
  3. if you installed yum
  4. yum -y install totem
  5. or
  6. yum -y install totem-xine
  7. if you installed apt,
  8. apt-get install totem
  9. OR
  10. apt-get install totem-xine
