can you specify what game you're referring to?
because when you say a "source dedicated server",
it makes me think of counter-strike source.

Here is the Server Guide

I found a nice guide on the steampowered forums but when I went to do it I found out that SUSE 10 does not have a uncompresstion for gzip. I thought it would.

gzip -d is the command to decompress a gzip file.
You can use mingzip -d as well. If SUSE doesn't have that, I'll never use it. Thanks for the warning.

The guide Im currently following is here

The steps I take are

Code: [ Select ]
wget http://www.steampowered.com/download/hldsupdatetool.bin

chmod +x hldsupdatetool.bin

./hldsupdatetool.bin
  1. wget http://www.steampowered.com/download/hldsupdatetool.bin
  2. chmod +x hldsupdatetool.bin
  3. ./hldsupdatetool.bin

After the last step is says that it could not uncompress.

Now is maybe there is something more I have to add to the command?

You said -d?

so would I do

Code: [ Select ]
./hldsupdatetool.bin -d

suse does have the ability to decompress gzip files. you can either do this via CLI or GUI. obviously w/gui you'd double click it. i'm going to reboot to suse so that i can see for myself how this setup should go / what you'd do. i'll update with more instruction.

ok, in the terminal as root enter this command:
ln -s /usr/bin/gunzip /usr/bin/uncompress
then do your ./hldsupdatetool.bin
then continue w/the tutorial

No, I thought that you were having trouble decompressing a .gz file.

Here is a quote from:
http://www.cstrike-planet.com/tutorial/1/5

If all goes well, you should now have two files in the srcds directory, the hldsupdatetool.bin which we downloaded earlier, and a steam file the hldsupdatetool generated, this is the file we will use to install Counter-Strike: Source.

Note: if you receive a 'uncompress: command not found' message it means your server does not have uncompress installed. You have two options to easily work around this, try the following while logged-in as root:
Code:

ln -s /bin/gunzip /bin/uncompress

Then try to run ./hldsupdatetool.bin again. If that does not work, or you do not have root privileges you can download the binary file we have available:
