Does anyone know the basics of SSH?

just wondering because it is becomming of a major concern among linux hosting.

also is there such a program that can literally login into your linux host and act as a GUI (like remote desktop for windows servers)?

SSH is just what it is. A secure remote shell to a server of your choice. Once connected your basically sitting in front of a monitor connected to the server and looking at a terminal.

Of course there is also other things like tunneling and the like, but there are quite a few websites out there for that.

As for remote GUI's, some people use VNC. There is also X11 forwarding. There is one other protocol that is quite popular, however I think it requires money. The name escapes me at the moment though.

You can find a lot more information simply by googling.

Hope this helps

For X11 forwarding, look into Cygwin (http://www.cygwin.com/)

yeah, SSH is basically like looking at a shell window of a linux box, get putty (google it) to use the linux shell on a *doze box, or type SSH at a linux console to bring up the ssh program :)

You should also look into FreeNX (http://freenx.berlios.de/). It is very similar to Remote Desktop for Windows.
