Can you open as root shell and type in:

ifconfig -a

And post the output. This will tell us whats happening with your network interfaces.

Also what wireless network card do you have? And what version of SuSe?

Hey there i'm having the same problem here.

I have a Proxim (Agere) orinoco silver card, and a TI PCI-1510 CardBus Controller (PCMIA) on a Dell Inspiron 1100.

When I run ifconfig -a, I get this:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0D:56:B5:2C:9E
inet addr:192.168.0.55 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)

I've tried a lot of different things, none of them have worked. I've asked a lot of people for help, none of them have helped. For the record, I'm currently running SuSE 9.3. I've tried Mandrake 10.1, Mandriva 10,2, Fedora Core 4, KNOPPIX, Linspire (the live version), and a few others. Please help me, as my linux experience is limited too (means i'm a nOOb).

Have you checked to make sure your card is on the HCL? (Hardware compat list)

It's entirely possible that it will not be, though using something like ndiswrapper could -- repeat, COULD -- help.

I haven't formally checked the HCL, but it's a Proxim Orinoco... I know for a fact that my friend with the same exact card got it working on his computer (still Dell, different model, he was using Gentoo), and he couldn't help me much (he doesn't live closeby and couldn't play around with it himself).

As far as ndiswrapper goes, I've tried it and it hasn't worked at all... through the interface provided in Mandriva and via command line in SuSE, but doesn't work either way. I have heard some pretty bad things about ndiswrapper, though.

Again, any suggestions would be helpful.

Hey I just finished Installing Suse 9.3.. onto my Inspiron 1100, smooth install I must say, and am in the same boat as you all. The only device that did not get loaded or detected was the Broadcom Wireless integrated NIC. I tried some of the default choices for wireless but got no results. The integrated NIC works like a charm though and am typing you this message from the laptop. Here is my output as well. Thanks in advance for any help.

just so you guys know, i solved the problem by
a) switching to ubuntu (i like this distro, if you have any problems contact me at ubuntuforums.org)

b) buying a netgear wg511t card (which isn't on the HCL)

c) using ndiswrapper

 Yeah I got the wireless working under Suse Linux 9.3 using the ndiswrapper instructions found here.

http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/medi ... sional_9.2

]It says instructions for 9.2 but still works for 9.3.

Thanks again to all that replied

Time to play with VNC!!!
