Ok so I've downloaded and installed the K Desktop Environment and i dont know how to set it up as the default GUI for my machine, ive updated my system since then and it has the folowing spec
512 of ddr 133 ram,
a 750 MHZ PIII copermine CPU,
nVidia Riva TNT II graphics card,
Atheros AR5005G 802.11abg wireless NIC,
AC97 sound and
200 gigs of hard disk space.

everything is up running and happy i just prefer the look of KDE
i don't believe I've left anything out but my other question is will this computer handle KDE smoothly or will i get lag left and right?

I don't know about Linux but FreeBSD uses the xinitrc file to determine what's used in the GUI.

There used to be a command known as switchdesk, I wonder if it's still there. But just give it a try, type this at the terminal: switchdesk kde

Otherwise you can edit xinitrc as Don2007 pointed out.
