I am new to linux and have successfully installed fedora core 3 to a spare computer. I can't seem to install a printer to this system. It seems that to add a printer, you need to choose from the system's list of printers but none of the 2 printers I have are listed. These are modern printers, Canon i320 and HP Deskjet 3845. I can't simply install the driver as in windows. Any ideas?

Most printers use CUPS and don't need specific drivers. Provided they are USB printers, plug them in, turn them on and boot up your machine. They should be detected as new hardware by kudzu and you just follow the instructions. I'm using an Epson C42+, which isn't offically supported by Fedora, but works fine with the OS thinking it's using a C44.
