Newbie to linux...I am trying to install redhat 8 personal on my machine which contains windows xp. This I'm trying to do on 2nd hard drive. When I place the cd in dvd drive I'm getting no where. Note: I installed it before on another machine without problems-the graphical interface came up for install. However, on the machine with windows xp...it doesn't recognize the dvd-rom nor the hard drives. I read some where that you can leave the drive unformatted and linux will detect the harddrive. Is that true?

Check if "boot from the CD" is first item in the list of the bootable devices in the BIOS.

And as for your question, yes, because linux formats the hard drive.
