I was installing VLC player and get this:

Due to the 2.6 kernel build system, external module compilation with a normal setup requires write access to //usr/src/linux There are several ways to fix/prevent this. Users can willingly let portage make this writable by doing # config-kernel --allow-writable yes

Now this command config-kernel doesn't work. Anyone can help?

I'll take a stab; do you even have config-kernel package installed? As late as April the image of Gentoo -- and that *is* what we are taling about here, right? -- did not have it. It was only created in April. You may need to install that package, then attempt to run it.

See if you can find it on the system someplace, and if so try to use an absolute pathname to it when you try and run it.

Cheers.

config-kernel, and although I might be mistaken, 2004.3 would be November, so thast is fairly recent. Which means you may have to build that particular package.

So I would install the config-kernel package.
