I've never understood how people can do serious development in vi. I know lots of people do (and are very productive in it), but I find vi more of a "small maintenance" editor. ...and it's great when you're remotely logged into a machine (ssh) and need to edit some files :) For more serious development, there are lots and lots of Linux editors... Kate is one that comes with KDE that is fairly intuitive.
